“Book It Now! Don't Stay Anywhere Else!”

This is a superb, value for money Hotel.
We stayed for a couple of nights as we were going to Folkstone races.
Although the Hotel does not have a car park, there is free parking on the road directly outside.
We paid an extra £5 (£65 instead of £60 per night) for a 'superior' room (room 2) and were not disappointed. The room was exceptionally spacious with King Sized Bed, 2 x sofa beds and a table with two chairs. It is also the only room with French doors and a balcony - ideal for smokers!
The room also had a wardrobe, chest of drawers, blanket box, iron & ironing board. A nice touch was the complimentary chocolates and bottles of water. The en-suite bathroom was very functional and immaculately clean.
The TV was a bit dated and only had 4 channels, but the picture was good.
When we arrived (2pm 13th Dec) the heating wasn't turned on in the room. However, a quick word with the chap on duty and it was sorted. The staff in general were very helpful and polite, who stressed that if we had a problem, not to hesitate to ask for help.
Although we didn't use it, the Skuba bar appeared to be popular and reasonably priced.
The continental breakfast included in the price consisted of tea/coffee, cereal, yoghurt, toast and jams. Simple but adequate.
The only criticism would be that the radiator in the bathroom didn't work, the towels were a bit 'scratchy', and the pillows - like most Hotels - were very thin.
The Hotel is situated a 10 minute walk from Folkstone Central station, where a train to the racecourse (Westenhanger Station is right outside the course) took only 10 minutes and cost £6.60 for a return journey for 2 people.
I would highly recommend this Hotel to anyone visiting Folkstone for any reason, but particularly if you are going racing.

“very impressed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2010

Stayed purely for the location next to the leas cliff halls - when i booked i received an email stating that as it was a small hotel there were no reception staff and we would have to book via the bar, staff were very attentive and friendly, we stayed in a room on the first floor overlooking the top of the bar/restaurant, had a sideways view of the sea. Room was huge and we could open the windows fully which was good as it was hot, everything was clean and tidy and there were little extras we did not expect like shampoo/shower gel, water and chocolates on the bed! Had a relaxing drink prior to the show and a hen night was just starting up, when we came back after the show the bar was very full and noisy mostly with very drunk hens one of which chatted up my very husband much to his pleasure (although not our sort of night out the staff and customers were all friendly) so we had a wine in our room, i expected to be kept up all night due to the noise but to my surprise i couldn't hear a thing. Great nights sleep, great room and staff, breakfast basic but did the trick to tide us over until lunch, very enjoyable and we will be back. Thanks to the staff who are the best in Folkestone (so far!)

“Friendly staff and lively atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2010

Your feet might stick to the floor in the bar but it was the liveliest place in Folkestone. Room was basic, no mirror on wall only frame. Bathroom was clean but shower dirty.

Basic breakfast.

“Does the job”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2010

Yes, the room was snug but everything was clean and the en-suite fittings pretty new. Staff were very friendly and the Continental breakfast more than ample. On the second floor the music from the bar (which closed at 1am Saturday night) was audible, though for many people probably not an issue. I wouldn't want to stay on a lower floor than that, though. No real space for luggage, so fine for a night, but not a long stay. We got a couple of Quality Streets on our pile of (new and fluffy) towels - another friendly touch.

“Nice and simple place to stay for the working man”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2010

Lets get one thing straight. Regarding the rooms, they are for you to lay your head down in, and shower for the next day. That's all there is to it. We spent 3 nights here for £88, which, for the south coast, almost made me feel guilty! Double it, and that would be still under the norm. Yes, we stayed on the fourth floor, and there was no lift. So what? Unless you're old / disabled, get a grip! If you're in Folkestone you're probably not there for the town, so that leaves walking the downs/cliffs or trips to France, which will also require walking! See it as a warm up and stop complaining!

We arrived, having driven all the way from just south of Amsterdam, and the barman sorted us with a room key and payment, showed us to our room, and left us alone! Excellent. The room's bed was better than ours at home, and the shower worked fine. Tv was a tad small, but we were not there to watch TV. We can do that at home. If we wanted food, the restaurant downstairs served decent meals, including a Crocodile and Chicken burger.. which was again excellent. The bar is facing the main coast road so is more of a main street bar than a hotel bar. It gets busy, but in our room, we heard nothing!

I really can't fault the place. The area isn't brilliant, but then I got the impression that Folkestone in general is a bit... you know.. unsavory! Live with it. £88 for 3 nights and a working shower. I know people renting houses for more per day and they don't live by a ferry port which will get you on to the continent. There is a railway station not far away, which we used to get us to Canterbury. Convenient, I think is the best way to describe the Portland.

Were I to do the same trip again... I'd stay there again. It's that simple!
