“Great room for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

Clean, large room, huge bed, tea and coffee, en-suite could not fault the place. A bit weird checking in at the bar but did not bother me. Great stay and will definately use again, did not have the continental breakfast on offer, stayed in bed due to a late night out and used one of the all day breakfast cafes around the corner. We paid £65 B&B for the larger double room which was very good value. We had an Xmas do at the Leas Cliff and just walked over the road to the hotel, definately the best choice and recommend highly!

Thank you for your review and I am glad you had a good stay with us. I understand the issue with booking in at the bar; I would feel the same. I do try to forewarn guests and our staff are briefed to make the process as quick and easy as is possible. Thanks again.

“Excellent Location”

I had a trip to Folkestone over 2 nights to visit family. The Hotel is mall but very welcoming and comfortable. Brilliant location for walks, beaches, shops, restaurants,
Really appreciated the upgrade on arrival and my room was fabulous. Thank you. Breakfast was continental style, very friendly staff will prepare toast and hot drinks for you.
The only issue that could occur is identifying a free parking space, but there are many spaces on the streets around the Hotel, just drive round a couple of times and onewill become available.
Fantastic value for money, will stay here again, next time I'm visiting.

“Excellent Value For Money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

I researched a lot of hotels and B&'B's in or near Dover for an overnight stay to catch an early ferry to Calais. Most Guest Houses (B&B's) were about £40 - £50 per night. But I'm not really a big fan of the Guest House experience. There were some really nice 4*+ hotels, but they were £75 - £100, which was too much for a bed for the night. I chose the Portland Hotel in Folkestone for price, £35 and the positive Tripadvisor comments.

The staff and location are the best thing. A very friendly welcome in the bar and as you've read, they have no standard hotel reception. I've never experienced this before, but then had to do the same thing the next night in Holland! But it's no big deal.

I was on the 4th floor, but I've no trouble with stairs. Some people may do, so request a lower floor upon booking. The hotel is across from the town gardens and beach and the town centre is a 5 minute walk.

The room was more than adequate for what I paid, £35. That's the same price as 2 glasses of champagne at Claridge's Bar in London! Sure one of the chairs in my room had a tear in it, and the shower head only produced an uneven dribble/spray, but it was clean and comfortable for the night.

My room was on a floor with 3 other rooms, and one of the other guests let their door slam about 6 times between 11pm - Midnight. Very annoying and inconsiderate as I was trying to sleep from about 10:30pm. Maybe polite notices on the doors or better door hinges will prevent this.

Although what looked like reasonable prices, the food menu was far too vast to entice someone who seeks fresh products. You name it, it was on thier menu. Large menu's are far from inviting.

The bar is modern, the staff very good and the drinks prices reasonable. They have a large outdoor patio area and it does get busy as the bar is popular with a mixed crowd of locals.

Breakfast was very simple, but again for £35 room and breakfast, I wasn't expecting a glass of champagne or a freshly made egg whites only omelette or pancakes with Canadian Maple Syrup. I expected what was there, tea, coffee, juice, yogurts, cereal, some cheeses and toast. The same items would cost you £5+ in any town cafe.

For an overnight stay or a weekend break, The Portland is fantastic value for money and I would stay there again before paying £75+ for the Ramada, Holiday Inn or any other chain hotel.
