“Welcoming and friendly in a quiet location”

I stayed here with my wife and two other couples for two nights in late October 2010.
The owners were welcoming and the hotel very comfortable.
Our room was simply enormous, with a wide screen TV and comfortable beds - in fact a lot more comfortable than the Premier Inn where we stayed the previous night!
Breakfast times were flexible, with a range of combinations on offer and they even have an honesty bar!
This hotel combines a quiet location with good food and a pleasant atmosphere, and is extremely good value.

“A real find - great service and perfect for the channel ports”

We needed to break our journey and have an overnight stop with our 3 young children. Searching the Internet, the Wycliffe seemed like the best option and we booked over the phone with a very friendly-sounding owner.

The hotel feels like a big B&B+... we were welcomed at the door and the house rules explained. Nothing complicated - the only thing that was slightly unusual was that we needed to write your breakfast order in a book in the hall before going to bed (to make sure it was ready on time in the morning). The kids really enjoyed that and were made to feel at home straight away.

The family room had plenty of space for all of us and was spotlessly clean. We put the kids to bed and enjoyed a quick drink in the honesty bar. There is also a big guest lounge and a small garden too.

The breakfast was excellent and fabulous value. You help yourself to cereal etc and then your cooked breakfast (whatever you've ordered) is brought to you, dead on time!

The beach area in the town is only a few minutes walk and there are some excellent outdoor play areas in trees by the beach which were just perfect for the kids to let off steam and get some fresh air after a long drive.

Our only minor criticism was of the area itself - we stayed on a Sunday night and we couldn't find anywhere suitable to eat in the evening so ended up with a take-out pizza. Might be worth you planning ahead (or asking for advice and booking a table) if you are traveling with young children yourself.

The ports are only a few minutes easy drive and so if - like us - you need to find somewhere to break your journey, we'd strongly recommend the Wycliffe.

They had nice, compfey beds and super breakfast

“Very pleasant place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

My wife and I stayed at this establishment on the 9th and 10th of August. It was very clean and well appointed accommodation with very friendly management and staff. Our ensuite shower room and toilet was well decorated and equiped if a little cramped. There was plenty of on site parking which was our initial reason for choosing the Wycliffe as many other hotels in the area had none. We did not eat at the hotel or drink in the bar but our stay was very enjoyable and importantly, for us, our privacy was respected. I do have just one negative comment to make and that is ... we were unable to watch digital TV in the room as there appeared to be a problem with the signal. I just think that if an establishment is advertised as having digital TV then it should work.

“Nice enough, but one thing bugged me...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2010

... and that was the fact that the hotel folder you get in your room is full of "and if you do this, you will be charged".

It was clean, but really very cold. I woke up freezing. The TV was so small and so far away from the bed that you couldn't watch it!

The owners were friendly, but I had the feeling that if you took them up on any of their "kind offers", you would get a huge bill for it.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2010

Victorian building full of character, Large family room, Helpful and friendly owners - Treated not as a customer but as guests.

Food very good.and generous portions. Stayed 2 nights -- Definately will return.

Not a hotel for those who like modern boxes with no character. A hotel for those who want good value - combined with excellent service.
