“Tired...but reasonable value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

Check was efficient and the counter staff were polite. Reception area and the bar have a certain faded charm. Returning back from our evening, we were informed the bar closed at 11! Practically unheard of in a hotel of this size. The night porter, however will gladly make you a drink at any time, nice, but its not the same.

Its a great building with many interesting features but could do with a sympathetic refurbishment. Our room had been refurbished on a budget. Paid £100 for a "de luxe" room, hmmm...no aircon in a room described as de luxe? Room was quite small and the furniture was low quality...bare chipboard sidetables with a fabric throw over them....poorly constructed bedroom units and domestic quality fittings in the bathroom, which was huge by the way so why the tiny shower cubicle?

All in all was reasonable value for money and will probably stay again, it NEARLY worth the money, the owners just need to have a bit more understanding of the word "de luxe"

Room Tip: In the summer get a room on the north side as there is no aircon

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your review.
I am pleased to hear your stay was reasonable value for money and hope to see you again at the Burlington, where we will be more than happy to allocate you another type of superior room. Please note the wording Deluxe room has replaced what was called a Superior room, due to internet booking standards. Our superior rooms are more spacious than standard rooms and often offer sea views. Regarding the bar service, please note hotel residents can be served all night in the lounge, although the bar counter itself is locked after 11pm for security reasons.
Yours sincerely

prior to travelling on the calais ferry we stayed at the burlington and to be quite honest we really enjoyed our night stay there with out pet dog we had booked on line and we were charged £42.00 PLUS A £10.00 fee for our pet.however on are return to the U.K. seven months later we arrived early hours in the morning 01-45 and decided to stay again at the burlington arriving there about 02-45 in the early hours both really tired and suffering from fatigue considering i had driven non stop from germany the night clerk told us we would have to pay £85.00 for a room plus £30.00 for our pet which we thought was a complete rip off bearing in mind what we had payed earlier on in the year the clerk informed us it was not his fault and it was company policy for the charges we decided rather then get ripped off we would continue our journey back home ,although i cannot fault the level of stay at the hotel we will not stay there again

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your review.
I am sorry you did not stay at the Burlington due to the higher room rate on this occasion. As you mentioned, you enjoyed a very good rate on your last stay because you booked in advance and this was during a quiet period. Like all hotels, our rates fluctuate depending on the season, date and occupancy of the hotel and it is recommended to make an advance booking to enjoy the best available rate. This can be done directly with the hotel or online to offer you discounted rates such as advance purchase rates. Unfortunately you did not book on your last visit and the rate available for that night was £85.00 which was our standard rate for this period.
Regarding the pet charge, there is a charge of £10 per night and I can only assume there was miscommunication from the night receptionist and this will be addressed. I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Yours sincerely.

“2nd visit to this hotel, anniversary treat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend about 2 years ago and really enjoyed it so when we were looking to go away for our anniversary and the weather was so glorious we thought the folkestone coast would be perfect. We have a travel offers card which gives free accomodation and you only have to pay for meals so we only paid £70 dinner, bed and breakfast each for 2 nights. It was great value! Our room, on the ground floor (no.4) was huge and very traditionally decorated, it had recently re-carpeted so looked fresh and clean, very comfortable bed and great shower over bath. The interior of the burlington was once grand and now looks a little tired but I love it, some beautiful edwardian features and quirky feel. We had a lovely weekend the only negative point is the restaurant staff speak very little english and rely heavily on the restaurant manager to translate, he was run off his feet at times. We found this midly amusing and it didn't spoil our experience at all but can imagine if you'd paid going rate it could be annoying. The food was very good.

“Needs attention”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

Stayed at The Burlington on the way to Germany and on the way back. On way out checked in, went over to the lift aiming for the third floor, after many attempts to get the lift to go, the 3 button just would not work so we ended up going to the second floor and then struggling up the last set of stairs with our luggage. Room 356(washbasin plug would not stop in so great waste of water). Had dinner, food very good and breakfast was a build yourself up to eight item meal, hot and very good. On the way home checked in and again given a room on the third floor (344), the lift had been repaired, but obviously not by a trained mechanic as the three button was covered by paper and an arrow pointing to the the hold the doors open button to gain a ride to the third floor. Once inside 344, nice and clean, but although we had booked and said at reception a twin bedded room, 344 is a king size double, we were shattered so couldn't be bothered to change rooms. It must be a thing with hotel wasbasins, again the plug would not stop in, but this time the toilet water was continuously running with the noise that goes with it, after looking for a sollution, I used a plastic coat hanger to keep the ball cock in place. The bathroom door would only shut by banging it, so we decided to leave it slightly open, allowing us to go to the toilet in the middle of the night without waking half of Folkestone. Breakfast the next morning was a very poor affair, there was a conference in the hotel, therefore breakfast was buffet, no mushrooms, no black pudding, eggs that had been standing for ever, bacon that had only viewed the pan.

Room Tip: Ask if the lift is working properley and make sure the room is what you have asked for

“Lovely atmosphere, quaint, and great staff.”

The Burlington has a real character to it. It is in a nice location. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The room was a little 'antiquated' but that is part of the charm - absolutely nothing wrong with that!

We chose The Burlington because I and my wife wanted to stay somewhere in Folkestone with my parents but in a hotel that accepted pets - my parents have 2 border collies. The Burlington allow their guests to bring pets. (You have to notify them beforehand.) They even provided some doggy beds. The extra charge was 10 pound per dog per night. Quite reasonable.

Breakfast was great too.
