I really don't understand the reviewers that enjoyed their stay here? Perhaps they were at a different hotel?
We stayed here on a Saturday night to go out on a meal with our friends. When we arrived, we had to wait for ages for reception staff which was not good after a lengthy travel. There was no bell to ring, no way to attract attention. There was also no staff in the bar (on a Saturday afternoon!?). Eventually when the receptionist did arrive (without a word of apology) and check us is, I had to argue at length as she was demanding payment again, despite having paid in full when I booked. Eventually she relented (and didn't apologise again) and gave us our keys.
Our first opinion of the room was "this looks ok". Oh no it wasn't! The room was absolutely freezing and a portable heater in the corner suggested that this was a known problem. So we put the heater on full blast and went to the radiator which was switched off. Eventually we managed to work out the knob to switch it on (should you really have to do this in a hotel??). Ignoring the ominous clanking and groaning which made us fear an imminent explosion of the radiator, it eventually managed to heat the room.
On further exploration we noticed the towels on the window sill. What an unusual place to keep towels I thought? Picking it up, it was soaking wet. The windows were water damaged from condensation (that was why it was cold then) there was black mildew on the window frame and the windows were cracked and damaged. The curtains were mouldy and ripped and clearly no one has even bothered to hide this.
Nevertheless we had to leave as we were due to meet our friends. When we came back we politely pointed out that the room probably wasn't suitable for renting out to the public. The "duty manager" (i use the word for the oldest receptionist in it's loosest term) was rude and uncaring and didn't take the issue seriously. When we went to make our way back to our room, we were stopped by someone calling themselves the manager, having clearly overhead the "duty manager", he instantly apologised to us and upgraded us to an executive room.
This was fine as it stood and eventually we went to bed (after being ushered out of the 24 hour bar by the rude barmaid as it had shut, but that's a different story). Then in the middle of the night we heard why the George is so old and traditional - it has no sound insulation. We were awoken several times in the night from several different directions, including one "lady" who did nothing but swear and cackle at how funny she was. We banged on the walls and shouted for them to be quiet but to no avail. We were too tired to do anything else about it so let it go.
The next day we mentioned the poor experience we had to the receptionist how was fundamentally uninterested in our situation. We were too fed-up to do anything else so left as quickly as possible.
All in all avoid this place at all costs unless you get it really cheap or have a strong need to be next to the train station.
Room Tip: Avoid any of the rooms with mould on the windows, it's probably not safe.
