First thing: the staff here are great, which makes up for a lot of the niggles.
I stayed here for 3 nights on business, so I didn't get to see the gym facilities! There is plenty of car parking, and the bar area is comfortable and welcoming.
The rooms are rather small, and in the first room I checked into, the TV was faulty (kept switching itself off), and so was the shower. Reception were very helpful and assigned me another, different, room on the second day. However this room, though comfy, was even smaller! The bed barely fit across the room. And the shower wasn't a great deal better, I'm afraid.
A big problem I found was internet access. Incredibly, the hotel is asking £10 for a 256kbps connection - this would be hilarious if it wasn't so poor. You could also pay £15 for a 'premium' 1Mbit connection. I've never heard of such outdated, pathetic service. I had my mobile dongle with me, but the reception was very bad - not the hotel's fault, obviously, but considering their own connection and prices, I simply couldn't justify staying in this hotel for business again.
The selection of TV Channels is astonishingly bad - not even close to Freeview. Essentially it's the 5 major terrestrial channels, plus Sky1, and CBBC. Obviously if you're travelling with family or friends then this isn't relevant, but most of the travellers here are on business and I'd like to be able to watch a decent choice of channels, thanks!
The room service menu offers a selection of cold sandwiches (or a toasted club sandwich), pizzas, baked potatoes, salads and rather expensive mains. The tray charge here is £3 - sounds bad but it's about average compared to other hotels.
The food came quickly, and was always very fresh and the order was correct every time. I'd particularly recommend the club sandwich and the Eton Mess dessert, this was smashing. The skinny fries are rubbish - go for the chunky chips every time. However I felt that asking £5 for a fruit salad (most of the desserts are £5 or more) is, frankly, taking the mickey, especially since it's free at breakfast!
The air conditioning is overly complicated to say the least - it seemed to veer between too hot and a bit draughty/not warm enough, even when I only altered the thermostat by 1 degree. And be warned - the desk has been positioned directly under the aircon path, so no matter what, you're going to be sitting in an irritating draught of moving air. This was the case in both rooms.
Breakfast was generally very good - wide selection of hot and cold food. I rate hotels on how fresh/plentiful/varied the fruit salad is. And on 2 out of the 3 breakfasts I had, this was great. However on one day it clearly hadn't been refilled for a looooooong time, and on a couple of the days, the milk provided for cereal was *warm*. Bizarre and rather offputting. The orange juice is cheap and rather naff from a machine, but it was ice cold and there's lots of it. However, overall I thought the breakfast was well above average - a free Independent newspaper is very welcome, too.
Check out was efficient and friendly, so I'm rating this hotel as three stars - one each for the food, comfy bed, and good location. Shame about the TV, small rooms, and lack of internet access.
Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are quieter - I was swapped to a room at the front due to broken TV...
