My Mum and I travelled here recently for a 2 night Spa Break booked through a spa break website whilst our other halfs were away playing golf elsewhere...
Firstly the spa break people were fantastic making sure from when we booked the trip that they asked us what time we wanted our treatments to what time we wanted to be booked in for dinner which at the time I thought was a bit eager but when realising how busy the hotel was I fully understood and was grateful as not only did we have the treatments at the right time of the day for us but we had dinner already booked also.
Was one of the nicest that I have been in - very relaxing colours, imaculately clean, beautiful bathroom and a fridge which was plugged in and on - so very often in hotels now the fridge is in situ but not switched on - this was lovely with complimentary water. Can't fault the room.
Again nothing to fault - kept very clean and tidy by the staff despite it being a busy weekend - lovely to get a drink next to the pool and we had lunch on the Saturday which felt a bit overpriced but when you got it it was huge - good value for money.
We both had an inclusive treatment with our package but also adopted to book another treatment each - The hot stone back massage was fantastic - I also booked a facial which whilst it was nice not sure it was really worth the £58 that I had paid for an Elemis facial as the products used were not Elemis..
Now this is where this hotel differed from every other hotel/cruise around the world that my Mum has been to and I cannot thank them enough for this as she felt so special...
My Mum has colieac disease which means that she cant eat any wheat or gluten - I had emailed the hotel a couple of days before we went to advise them of this and to say that she would be bringing her own bread (we stopped off in Winchester as she had forgotten to bring it)!! but could the waiting staff just help her in the evening by checking with the chef what she could eat safely.....no need.....when we went to the restaurant on the first night when we gave our name for our reservation the first thing the matre de said was "which one of you ladies requires the gluten free" my Mum was gobsmacked....only to be followed up with "we are just doing you some gluten free bread"...she has never ever been offered gluten free bread at the same time as everyone else is offered bread with an evening meal..she was stunned..then we sat down and our waitress came over with 3 slices of gluten free bread for her...I know that this doesn't sound alot to most people but when you suffer from this disease for someone to go out of their way to accommodate you and not make you feel like you are making a fuss is fantastic...
The waitress gave us our menus - we were on the market menu - out of 4 starters she could eat 3, out of 4 mains she could eat 3...there was no checking required as the waitress just went through the menu and only pointed out what she couldn't eat - the choice for her was fantastic - there was no awkward moment for her when she had to ask "could you just check that sauce is ok for me" they were already on the ball and we didn't feel that we had to ask them to check as they seemed so switched on to it...
Dessert menu came out and low and behold - dish marked "suitable for gluten free, sugar free and dairy free"
Next morning at breakfast different waiting staff but when we said our room number - same again "right we will just get your gluten free bread" she was made up!!!
The quality and quantity of the food was fantastic - so often in hotels the portions can be small not in this hotel the portions were great..we had thought about upgrading to the al la carte on the second night as we felt that with only 4 starters and 4 mains we might not find anything else that we wanted - no need - menu changed the next night and another 4 dishes to choose from...again different waiting staff but still knew about Mum - even the sommelier knew that she was gluten free and joked with her about the amount of bread she had eaten....needless to say she brought her own bread home with her...
We had a great trip to the Donnington Valley and I would fully recommend it - silly little things impress me - no marks on any of the carpets in the room or the corridor, no scuffs from suitcases on skirting boards - all in all a great place to stay - would we return definitely no question about it only this time not only will be having a spa break but my Dad and other half would be having a golf break as well - dont want them missing out.....
Thanks again especially to all the waiting staff who must have a special mention...and because I felt so strongly about this hotel this is my first ever trip adviser review - always mean to do it but never get round to it - so I must feel this is worth the effort...
