“Very good value hotel”

I went to Green Gables last weekend and stayed in a one bedroom self catering flat with my husband and two sons. I was able to pay up front over the phone by debit card, which is brilliant and convenient and the hotel were able to assist me with my queries about bedding, towels and so forth there and then. They loaned us a cot and bedding at no extra cost and were genuinely very pleasant to deal with.

On arrival, we found the flat was very clean and a really good size. The decor is a bit dated but not worn and kept clean and tidy. The facilities are excellent and the pool is a decent temperature, with lockers in the changing rooms.

There is a games and snooker room and other facilities and they are all a decent size and the parking is really handy.

The instructions on how to use the facilities are clear and the introduction we got on arrival was also useful.

The beds were firm and comfortable and there was a thermostat for the flat so we could adjust the temperature ourselves, which is nice.

The hotel itself backs onto a park with swings, a wildflower meadow and wooded area so you can have a walk straight from the back door if you fancy it.

Basically, this hotel is well run and excellent value for money, and its own website does not really do it justice.

We will be going back, most likely with family and/or friends. i would really recommend you give it a try.

Room Tip: We were in flat P, from which you can see the rear car park and the park behind the hotel.

“Friendly, clean and good value”

Reviews of this place seem to be polarised. We're firmly in the top marks camp, but we went with the right expectations.

We rented an apartment (2 bedroom, kitchen, living room). The place is clean, tidy and I would have said the room been recently redecorated. As others note, the style of decor is dated (woodchip wallpaper! If you want up-to-the minute equipment and fittings, go to Sands on North Bay - but expect to pay 3x as much).

Service was really helpful and kind. Didn't eat there as we were self-catering. Restaurant closes early so check if it matters to you. Public rooms were lovely (again, not exactly contemporary decor) with several pianos, games room, swimming pool. Building was fascinating with a interesting history ("R B D Wells, Phrenologist" in the stonework hints at a story).

This did us really well. Very pleased and would stay here again.

“Comfortable short break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

Although the hotel is not everybodies cup of tea (friend of mine stayed earlier this year but wasn't particulary impressed!) we really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is adequate and is full of character, although a little 'tired' in places, but considereing the price I think it was more than acceptable. It also made it more comfortable and relaxing due to going with a young family. The staff were brilliant and couldn't do enough for us to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The swimming pool was a bonus for us due to the inclement weather meaning we couldn't get out as much as would have liked. Only thing to consider when going to this hotel is the location, a bit of a walk to Scarborough. We used appartment but was still able to have cooked breakfast for reasonable rate (and didn't need to book in advance - if you decide to have a sleep in!!)

Room Tip: Our appartment looked over the lovely park at the back of the hotel and was very quiet

“Quirky clean and tidy hotel - very good for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

Well it's a big old hotel with the feel of an old hospital perhaps. The building is old and full of character with it's public rooms downstairs with hugely high ceilings etc. Like most of Scarborough (and in fact most UK seaside resorts) it is unquestionably dated...but we loved it.
First impressions were good - tidy, clean and well organised. Most of all friendly staff which felt genuine rather than just a learned patter. The suite we were in was huge and well equipped including flat screen TV, leather sofas. Otherwise painted woodchip, striplights and patterned carpets or vinyl were the order of the day...but it was very clean, tidy and well aired. I'd rather have clean and well organised dated facilities than dirty, chaotic modernised facilities. We had great weather but It looked as if the hotel would cope well with rainy weather with large games rooms, TV rooms and sitting rooms as well as a small but perfectly functional pool.
It's a bit of a walk to the seafront (20-30 minutes perhaps) but easily do-able by a fit and active family, or it's easy to use a taxi or drive. The upside of this is that the hotel is right next to a park and in quite an elevated position - we could see the sea from our rooms.
In summary, like much of Scarborough, could do with an injection of investment, but, for what it was we appreciated staying in a place that was tidy, clean and well managed. Full of character too! Great place!

“Great Find!”

Two night stay with wife and two kids (5 & 9). Took a self catering flat in hotel; kitchen, sitting room, two bedrooms and a bathroom. Yes, it looks like 1978 decor, but its clean, functional, traditional and more importantly spacious!! Who cares that patterned carpets are "old fashioned" - they were clean and in great condition. The Indoor pool was a big hit, and the staff were really helpful. The hotel looked pretty full in the car park, but it was really all quiet and tranquil inside. Loads of communal rooms to explore (lounge, library, games room, etc) and they do food for those not self catering. We will definately be back!!

Room Tip: We took flat Z - no view, but quiet!
