“Nightmare”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

Me and my wife stayed here in september for 2 nights. the pictures on the website must be from another hotel. we couldn't wait to get out, (£45.00 per night no breakfast) as soon as my wife opened the room door she sat on the bed and cried. the mattress looked like it had been dragged out of a local skip, the door looked like it had been kicked in on numerous occassions, there was only one hinge on the toilet seat, holes and mould in all the walls, the room had a terrible smell. we couldn't wait to leave, we booked into a premier inn for the next 3 nights. I Would NEVER go there again.

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

“Just don't do it!”

I know it's only rooms over a pub and one shouldn't expect much but these are awful rooms. Stal smell of sweat, mucky brown carpet, missing bits of plaster, broken window pane, indescribeable pillows, plug sockets hanging off walls, cigarette burns on the windowledge...I could go on but would run out of space.
The sad thing is with a bit of effort and a few hundred quid they could be made to be quite decent. It's just a shame the landlord isn't interested and while there are mugs like me willing to part with cash (yes, I kid you not, hard cash is required on arrival!) then I suppose there's not much incentive for him to do the work. If you're thinking about booking...don't!

“Absolutely loved it =) Don't see what the fuss was about!”

Me and my boyfriend stayed here from the monday 1st august to thursday the 4th, and we loved it. After saying goodbye to my mum and family, who we were previously staying with, we were shown up to room 3, which is right at the top. The woman that directed us was very friendly and even though there were many stairs to climb, the sea view more than made up for it. We were given a key for our room, the door to the rooms upstairs and a back door key, so if we didn't want to walk though the pub or disturb anyone, we could go through the back door.

As we weren't staying long, we didn't unpack and lived out of our suitcases. The room was very spacious and we were able to walk around freely. It was also lovely and warm and the window opened and closed easily so that it didn't get too stuffy or cold. The door was quite hard to open and there were some indents in the wall where other people had pulled or pushed too hard. There were also a few marks on the ceiling but the room still felt cosey and like home. The bed was very comfy and the television could easily be seen from the bed, however, the tv made a lot of crackly noises, but this would be due to the digital switchover. There was also a chair by a large clean mirror, this chair was very comfy and the amazing sea view could be seen without having to stand up at the window.

The bathroom was quite clean, and even though the shower didnt work, the bath was lovely and deep, with very hot running water (Ideal for long soaks). The tea and coffee making facilities were very useful and worked as they should.

We found that the room was quiet regardless of it being over a pub, and we got to sleep fairly easily. The seaguls were noisy and the blind let the morning light in, but this can't really be helped.

Access to the beach was very easy as there were some steps from the back door all the way down, or alternatively there is an incline with shops all the way down. It is very close to the beach, as it only took a few minutes to walk down.

Overall, we thouroughly enjoyed our stay and are likely to return.

“You will not return if you stay here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

This review is delayed due to technical problems with my computer.Celebrating a family birthday in June, we booked 2 rooms here. From the moment we were led up the stairs at the back of the pub, we were feeling negative. Negativity increased once inside the rooms. In 1 room, the walls were marked and there were dead insects on the window sill. The window sill clearly hadn't been cleaned. The carpet was sticky. The windows had ill fitting curtains with only 1 tie back (the tie back was missing from the other side). The bed sheets were clean although the bedspread not so.The bathroom was clean but basic. The only place to hang clothes was in a cupboard that didn't appear suitable for clean clothes. The 2nd room was in a similar state but instead of dead insects on the window sill, it had used cotton buds in the drawers.Disgusting! It is clear from the review made in July by a guest staying a month after us, that these cotton buds (and other unpleasant items) are permanently left here (evidence that the rooms do not receive the most basic of cleaning treatments). The mattresses/springs in both rooms were well worn causing 2 people sharing a bed to 'meet' in the middle. After staying in this establishment, I will never complain about Travelodges again. Travelodges are cleaner, cheaper and far superior to these rooms. It is a shame because the pub itself is full of atmosphere, has good live music and is cosy. The staff and Manager are extremely friendly. My advice is - have an enjoyable evening in the pub but stay elsewhere.

“PLEASE READ!!!!!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

Ok before you start reading this I would just like to say, that I don't general moan or write negative feedback about our trips away. When I say I, I actually mean my husband and our two friends age range 35-40 years old.
We arrived at the hotel and walked into the bar area for our keys, we was told we have to pay before we were shown to our rooms. After payment, we was then showed to our rooms, you can get to your rooms through the bar area, but to do this you have to empty the corridor of instrument cases which are just left there and they are not small cases. If you want to go to your room while the band are playing, the band have to move for you, then once again you have to empty the corridor. Once you have battled with the instrument cases then you have to climb the very steep narrow stairs to get to your room.

The room doors were unlocked, then we were left, a little tip to opening the door....just shoulder charge it!!!! (The doors have very tight springs on and they don't wanna open)

The room itself was very basic, quite small, with a small double bed, chest of drawers and 1
chair and a television with DVD built in, but there was no tv signal!! And OMG there were
plenty of extras!!

The carpet in the room - very sticky, feet stick to it....take some slippers!
Television no signal - take your on DVDs.
Coffee making facilities - take your own.....god only knows what was floating in our kettle!!
Chest of drawers - guarantee you won't use them, the various stains on the front of them are a little off putting!! But, if you are brave enough to open the drawers, be prepared to what you might find....in our top left drawer we had used cotton buds, in our top right drawer we had a used......yes you guessed it!!! Didn't bother to open the other drawers!!
Window- a very old sash window, if you open it, be careful as it slams back down!
Ceiling- full of damp- if you suffer from asthma don't go!!
Curtains- none....instead a roller blind...if you catch it in the wrong place, it will fall down. If you do use the blind...in the morning when the sun's shining through, you will see all the stains on it!!
Skirting boards- at least an inch of muck and dust on them, and more stains!
Heating- didn't work but there was a 1 bar halogen small portable fire, which was useless, and with them old windows and the hotel facing the sea, it was cold.
The walls- again full of stains, there was even holes in the walls!
The bed- looks a nice bed....but isn't..I think every spring was sticking out and the sheets were that thin you could see blood and staining through them from the mattress!
Bedding- clean....I know this as the numerous stickers was still on them from the launderette. However the bedding smelt realy bad.

I realy could go on with this list, but I think you might of got the general idea! So will move onto the bathroom:

The floor- whoever was in the room before liked there talcum powder, and had realy big feet ha ha I know this because his foot prints were in the talc on the floor.

The bath- good deep bath, only problem was the brown scum line around the bath, the ledge around the bath also had this brown scum on!
The tiles- full of damp!
Shower curtain- I'll just say.....OMG....needs burning!
The sink- looked like someone had washed their hair in the sink, someone with long black hair, I know this because the hair was still sitting in the sink!
The toilet- not even going there!!
Complimentary soap- used!

The smell of the room was over whelming, I would say a combination of damp, dirt and the chip shop!

The staff seemed friendly enough, there was 2 of them, they didn't have a clue about the rooms, which was fair enough, they was there to pull pints not to be hoteliers.
No management on site!

This place is called the Merchant Hotel, be very assured that this is not a hotel, it is a dive of a pub with a couple of spare rooms that they rent out!
If you go on their website their rooms look ok, and quite large and advertise as a luxury boutique hotel....this pub has never ever seen luxurious nor boutique!! This is false advertising!!!!!!!
I will say it was not just our room that had been totally neglected, our friends room was the
same, everything was disgustingly dirty and the place stunk rotten!!
Did I mention I came home with bites on my legs not sure what they was but think, they might of been flea bites.
I have pictures to follow, to back up everything I have just said!!

Lastly all I can say is .......DON't DO IT!!!!!!! Hopefully you won't once you see the pictures.

Scarborough is such a lovely place, and we had a great time outside of our room and there are lots of lovely hotels and b&b's within Scarborough, find some where else, just wish we did!!
