“An hotel trying to hold on to a bygone image!”

On the whole this hotel was ok for what we paid but considering i had saved 218 (apparently) it would of been a different story.
The hotel is in a bad need of refurbishment. The lift had broken which didnt bother us as we were only 2 flights of stairs up but may of been a problem with others. The stairs and corridors were very creaky and there was cracks on the walls and ceiling. Leading to our room was doors which had seen better days. Our room itself was ok. Comfortable and clean. No more and no less. The coffee and tea were disgusting(cheap brand)
The front staff/reception did not come across as friendly at all. No smiles, no small talk just how much you owed and that was it.
The dining staff were more friendly along with the bar staff(same people shared the job).
So, a good place thats cheap to put your head down i guess.

Room Tip: Think the rooms on the front may be slightly better but not sure.

Unfortnatly my experience at the Clifton was not very pleasent... First of all we were greeted by a very snotty and unwelcoming gentleman who spoke to us like we were pests! I found him rather rude and arrogant and like we were not posh enough to be in his hotel. As we took the 7 flights of stairs to our room we noticed how old and shabby the whole interier was from the cracked walls discouloured paint and shabby carpets not only that but i would advice any body hard of walking to avoid this place! as the floors are so uneven and the floor boards move!

We finally got to our room and it was very clean and tidy but again very shabby and dated, The room its self was ok if you just plan on sleeping the night after a few beers as the bed was uncomfy and sqweeky and the quilts consisted of a few sheets and scratchy blankets.
We unpacked what we needed and headed out for the day as after reading that your only aloud in the bar and dining area in shirts and ties and as we had not packed any we though best to avoid.

The next day as i went to get in the shower it ran freezing cold and after runnign it for 20 mins to warm up i called reception where again i got a snotty member of staff who then informed me the boiler had broken. i asked when it would be fixed and got turn the shower off and i dont know could be 1 and half hours to 2!! i had no apology or nothing!
The next day we also noticed our sheets were never changed or the towels!!

All in all i would not return to this hotel for the simply fact of the quality of service we received and the over all hotel it is in serious need of a make over both decor and manners of SOME of the staff

One thing i am glad of is that i did not pay the £160 per night fee for this hotel as we won this 2 day trip!

“Will not return”

With each review I write, I try to be fair, pointing out (from my opinion) the good and the bad.

Unfortunately my stay in this hotel was not one of my better experiences. It has to be said that we obtained this room via a voucher offer so we did not pay the full price, if I had of done then I would have been even more disappointed.

The hotel itself is one of our countries older buildings offering hospitality that usually carry with them a charm of their own, however due to the poor upkeep and cleaning regime, it has been let down badly.

We paid a supplement for a superior room with a sea view, which on first inspection looked fine for the evening, until we went into the bathroom. I can only say that the toilet seat was up at the time and when I put down the lid I was shocked at the recent dirty stains all over it!!! My partner would not have a shower in the room as he said that he would feel even worse. The bathroom suite was old, the grout surrounding the bath old, dirty and mouldy, the floor tiles cracked. There were long black hairs in the bathroom sink. The hairdryer was out of the arc.

The windows in the room itself were filthy. We arrived late in the evening, we had not realised that to use the tv we needed to go back down to reception to put a deposit on the remote (£20) to enable us to use it, we decided not to bother.

The breakfast was off a cheap quality, although the service team were pleasant.

“Disappointing!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We booked this hotel for a family get together. We stayed here about 20years ago when it was fresh and vibrant. Unfortunately it is now looking very sad and is in desperate need of a face lift. We had to park on the road in the disc zone due to the car park being full and were charged £6 as the hotel had no discs left!! Overall very disappointing.

“Old but great”

I have been visiting the Clifton and other hotels in scarborough for many years, but the Clifton holds an enjoyable part of my life, old it may be in need of a face lift possibly but the traditional values of politness and service are the best around, the pace of life slows nothing is too much trouble for the staff who are well experienced, I much prefer the real hotel from the premier lodge sterotype long live the traditional hotel
