We stayed for a weekend with my parents and to be honest it wasn't the usual sort of place we'd stay. Not that there is anything wrong with the Belmont but it is more traditional in both style and attitude than the sort of place we'd normally go for.
It's location is perfect for exploring Sidmouth and it has lovely views. If golf is your thing there is a putting green out front. Other facilities such as a rather nice heater outdoor pool, indoor pool, spa and games room are available at the Victoria Hotel (sister hotel) next door.
The rooms were comfortable but not overly large. Decor was traditional - bit chintzy and fussy for me - but clean and well looked after. The cleaning staff take pride in their work.... Bottled mineral water (free) and chocolates on the pillows were nice touches. If you like a large arm chair or in your room you are in luck.
We had dinner included in our package so ate in. The food was good but again in a more traditional style. We ate at 19.30 and quickly found ourselves alone as most people ate far earlier - perhaps a nod to the average age of people staying there? (70+) Service was attentive and the staff were helpful.
Breakfast the next morning was all served to you at the table. No helping yourself to anything (not even jouce). This may be a plus for you, but for us it felt a little too much. I quite like a breakfast buffet to browse before ordering some cooked food.
All in all we had a nice stay. The service was attentive and quite old fashioned, which might be your idea of heaven or hell. I can't really fault it until I saw the price when I checked out - expensive (£200 for 2 of us)! As we weren't paying it wasn't an issue, but it means it's very unlikely that I'd return if I was paying. I've stayed in nicer places for less.
However, don't let this put you off - I'm not their target audience. My parents loved it and so do many of the older guests who return time after time.
Room Tip: I'm told its worth paying more to upgrade - the rooms are larger with sea views and bath robes.
