“not as expected”

We had a weekend at this hotel but we were very disapointed our room had a bad smell of damp the furniture well worn and tatty it was also very dull and depressing.
The breakfast was average and not very worm, the tables were small not much room to put plates etc.

Staff were very friendly.

Our frends who also stayed there with us thought the same.

I think it is over priced for the standard.and I certainatly would not recomend this hotel.

This hotel needs a real face lift and its damp smells sorting out otherwise it will not attract younger and newer guests.

SORRY BUT THATS THE WAY IT IS

“Unique gem”

We have just returned from 5 days at the Royal Glen and find it hard to fault. The good points were the location - on the flat so ideal for the elderly yet in a quiet situation minutes from the front, superb staff, comfortable rooms with new bathrooms, very clean, very friendly. The not so good points were lumpy pillows but these were replaced on request. The one evening meal we had was OK but not as good as Neil's restaurant for much the same price. However breakfasts were excellent. If you want to stay somewhere different with period furniture, this is for you. Don't expect lifts and minibars!

“we will definately return”

We had a great weekend at the Glen a grade 1 listed building that has modern comforts and a lovely pool. I cannot believe the other comments I have read, the hotel entrance, bar, restaurant are all beautifully decorated and although the rooms do vary in size due to the old building they were nicely decorated too. The food was delicious all freshly cooked local produce and the staff all very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return and recommend the glen to others.

  • Liked — They have managed to keep the ambience of building

“What a pit”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2007

Booked there for 2 nights. On arrival we were shown to a dark, dank, damp, smelly hole that they called a bedroom. Wife's asthma immediately erupted. Asked for another room. No can do. Left immediately. And, yes, you guessed it, they charged us for the full stay. If you stay in this pit having read this site, you only have yourselves to blame. The very essence of everything that is wrong with British hotels and, yes, I'm British.

“If you are tempted to stay here .... don't”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2007

The web site suggested this was a hotel with character. In reality the rooms were pokey (we had a B grade), the furniture was fit only for the junk yard and the bathroom was a disgrace. The car parks were very small and difficult to manoeuvre in.
Service in the restaurant was slow, and in some cases it seemed that the guests were an inconvenience. The menu selection was poor and the food often lukewarm. I have never been tempted to write a review of an hotel before but I feel as this was such poor value for money people ought to be warned.
