“Quiet, peaceful - fantastic for older guests”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

We stayed here with elderly parents with mobility issues who were given a ground floor room with reasonable access. We stored the wheelchair nearby and were able to access ground floor rooms with mother using a walking stick for support. Rooms were clean and comfortable, freshly painted. Food was OK but would have benfitted from better vegetables and less sauce on main courses - some combinations were a little weird! The swimming pool was lovely - warm and welcome for quiet morning and evening swims and there is a gymn alongside. Service in this hotel was good with offers of daily newspapers, portage and a pre-dinner bar most welcome. Definitely somewhere for older people looking for a quiet break by the seaside.

“Totally unsuitable and a waste of money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

Before booking this hotel we rang twice to ensure we could have a room with wheelchair access and a walk in shower. On arrival we discovered that there was no way to get a wheel chair into the room unless you got out of it and folded it up. The walk-in shower had a 9.5 inch step up! The room itself was so small that to get to one side of the bed you had to walk sideways. Nowhere in the room could we pass each other without one of us having to step aside. The bed was very low, but not as low as the 'arm-chairs' which neither of us could sit in for fear of not being able to get up again without help. The shower room was so tiny there was only just room to turn around. The toilet was so low we think it was designed for a child, we have naver seen one so low.
We were only able to use the downstairs lounges which were small, dark and cramped. The lighting was so poor it was difficult to read a book or paper. The upstairs lounge was much better but we were unable to use it as it was up a flight of 6 steep stairs!
The restaurant was down bout 5 or 6 steps but we did manage to use this as there was a hand rail for my husband to pull himself up them. One of the guests pulled himself up and the whole thing came away in his hand as it is only fixed by slotting the rail into a couple of holders. USER BEWARE! To eat here you needed to be early as there seemed to be a shortage of food. We would be shown the menu only to be told what was left. Biscuits for cheese is a good example - they go round the other tables to see what they have left, tip them into one basket and then give them to another table. The lady on the table next to us was a vegetarian but on the first night was told that they had had vegitarian food the night before and may be having some more the next day. We were told they would cater for any dietry requirements.
The car park was very small and we were told we could not reserve a parking spot near the door (or for that matter anywhere else) and if it was full we could park in the road for as long as we liked after 6p.m. They had a temporary ramp in the entrance of the hotel but on one occassion it had been removed and my husband was unable to get into the hotel at all. When I asked about it at reception they had no idea where it was, but to be fair, did manage to locate it after a short wait - over at the swimming pool.
We did persevere for two nights but when we came back on the third night to find no parking we had our dinner - packed our bags - paid our bill and left. We are only young pensioners and were able to drive half the night, many people would not be so lucky and would be trapped for longer.
We wouldn't recommend this hotel to our worst enemy, all they want is your money.

“Go there every year!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2010

We love the Royal Glen and go at least once a year, they rooms and service have always been great although the food is not good, but most people go out to the lovely places to eat that surrond it. Just a short wlk down the hill to the beach and great views. Has a mini golf court. We have our teenage daughter and her 2 cousins and her friend. They love it!!! Lovely people. We always go to the Drawing room to plan the day ahead as it has a libary of leaflets. HEATED POOL IS GREAT!!!

“Excellent value for money, wonderful service, charming hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2009

We have just returned from a week in the Royal Glen hotel in sidmouth and have had a wonderful time. We stayed in one of the "named" rooms which opened out onto the patio and garden - it was wondeful. The charming regency hotel with history throughout is situated just 100 yards from the sea front yet far enough away to be quiet in the evenings - ideal for those of us who like an ealry night. The food is excellent and the kitchen catered for all our needs and the staff were very friendly and helpful. What more can I say - try it for yourself - its a unique experience - not your usual "box-type" rooms that you find in all the major hotel chains - this hotel has charm, warmth and is a place I will return to next year without hesitation.

“Old fashioned charm and very well priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2009

We have just returned from a weekend break at the Royal Glen hotel, Sidmouth. After reading other reviews we were apprehensive at what we might find, especially considering the all in price of £264.00 for B+B for 2 nights (2 adults & 2 children). We were rather expecting a 'get what you pay for' experience considering some other hotels in Sidmouth are £350.00 per night!

What a nice place! It is clean, friendly, well decorated and well run. It has a family run feel about it, not the lifeless chain hotel atmosphere. The pool is very nice and we couldn't keep the kids out!

The breakfast may not be locally produced oganic fare (and all that waitrose-esque rubbish) but it is good and plenty of it, very good service in the dining room as well.

The place has a feel of history about it and the whole place is cosy and charming, narrow corridors, rich red hotel carpet and squeaky boards etc - we will stay again.

Either the place has been sorted out recently or there are some hard to please travellers out there, some of the other reviews are rather way off the mark. A nice hotel and very good value for money.
