“Pretty good.”

We stayed here in December while my husband met up with a former colleague and I did a bit of shopping! Our room, although on the small side, was lovely and warm, very clean and comfortable. Granted there was no heating in the en-suite but by leaving the door open for a short time, the temperature rose to match that of the bedroom so it wasn't a problem.
More shelf space in the bathroom would have been nice - I had to put some of my toiletries on the floor - and there were no biscuits on the tea-tray. We don't have biscuits at home so it's usually a treat for me. :-(
Scotland Road is pretty busy but I'd worked this out before booking and so asked for a room towards the back of the hotel, which we got, and as a result we both slept well.

We didn't use Almonds Restaurant so can't comment on that but breakfast was tasty and sufficient. It was little odd to be eating in what felt like a shop window, directly on the pavement, but I wouldn't let it put me off staying here again.

“Different experience to the reviews below!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Stayed here on a business trip as booked by my employer based on the reviews. Well, considering I stay away from home, 1 or 2 nights per week, I feel experienced to comment and my experience did not match those below.
Checking in was fine, I assume it was the owner and I found him relatively pleasant. I dropped my stuff in my room (Room 2) and then headed back out to a meeting to return later at about 10pm.
The room was basic, and lacked atmosphere. Facilities were fine, good supply of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Wifi was advertised but unavailable and this was an inconvenience as I had wanted to catch up on some work.
Bed was poor quality but did have sufficient bedding and pillows. The duvet was tucked in at the bottom of the bed so I loosened it so that I could pull it further up the bed, i like it tucked up close to my neck when I sleep! When I loosened the duvet I discovered that the bottom section of the duvet was not covered, either by a protector or by a cover. Strange! I felt uncomfortable as it meant my feet were in contact with the actual duvet and I am guessing this is not laundered after each stay.
The heating in the building was bizarre, corridors and landing were very warm and stuffy even when I returned at 10pm. However my room was very cold until morning. There was an electric heater available but I was concerned at having this plugged in for an extended period overnight. The bathroom remained freezing for the complete stay.
The bathroom was very clean but the fittings were of poor quality. The shower door was very flimsy and rattled on its hinges. The shower was a power shower but I could not get anything more than a steady trickle out of it. Towels were clean and fresh but I would advise being a size 10 if you wanted the bath towel to wrap around!
I found the room noisy even though it was to the back of the building. I could hear the tv from other rooms and in the morning I was awakened by people moving around in the building and by the constant chimes on the front door. I appreciate the owners need a system of knowing the front door has opened but I think something more discreet could be arranged.
Breakfast was ok, obvously prepared a little in advance, plated up and left in a very hot oven as shown by the amount of grease on the plate. I actually ended up shaking the grease off my bacon and eggs and eating them off a side plate. Cold buffet was ok but poor selection of cereals - no basic cornflakes or rice crispies.
Service at breakfast was good. It was served in the restaurant which also lacked atmosphere but was very clean. The artwork on the walls was around 30 years out of date and I dont think faded pictures of old Paris co-ordinate with film star posters!
On my departure, the reception was closed and checkout was through the restaurant. As I was bringing my case down to checkout the staff member was in the corridor and I asked if he could take my key. I explained that everything had been pre-paid and it was just a matter of giving back the key. He questioned me twice about my payment arrangements but never once went to check the records. I felt like I was trying to sneak out without paying.
Overall, premises extremely clean, service was adequate but this is not a hotel, it is an average B&B.

“Good Spot for Hadrian's Hikers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

The rooms were very clean and spacious. The bath was somewhat small but clean. It is located just a short walk up the hill from the Hadrian's Wall path. The Almonds restaurant serves exceptionally good food. The staff was extremely helpful in both the hotel and restaurant. We stayed there two nights. The first was after our hike down the path from Lanercost. The next day we took a cab to Bowness-on-Solway and hiked back, to avoid problems with the irregular transportaton from BOS in the afternoon. Overall, a good place to stay in Carlisle, especially for hikers.
