“If you value your life....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2010

We stayed 2 years ago (after the "refurb"). We arrived at the hotel after booking on the internet to find they had no knowledge of our booking. They said they had no rooms and we noticed there was a German family who had also booked to find no rooms. We waited around wondering what to do but there were no rooms anywhere in the area due to the snooker championships. Suddenly they found a room we could have but only for three when there were five of us. The manager said he would only give us rooms if we put a good review on here right away - luckily his internet crashed. When we looked at the room we were horrified. There were no curtains for the huge windows, the sheets were dirty and the windowsill had a tub of butter and a knife-god knows how long that had been there for. We also found a pair of boxers down the radiator and the bathroom looked disgusting. We decided we could not all fit in the rooms and no one was about to sleep on that carpet so suddenly they had another room. We went to look at it and found we could see the sky through the ceiling - not a velux window just a hole in the roof!! We decided to have a drink in the bar and were threatened by drunk 16 year old boys offering to do things to us I couldn't repeat, we also had threats from a drunk guy at the bar saying he was going to kill us for being rude to him!(not really sure what we were meant to have done). When my friends went out to pay for the parking the boys from the bar tried to corner them, they managed to get back to us and the boys continued to say some disgusting things to us. We decided to retire to our rooms locking the doors, only to realise they didn't lock. After a limited night's sleep and shifts watching the door we called each other between the 2 rooms so we all came out together for fear of anyone else threatening us. We left as soon as we could vowing never to return to that hotel and Rotherham. If you value your life I would stay well away.

DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL, I could go into the graphic details but the list would be long and revolting. Hotel is a generous description, slum is a generous descrition. I honestly think you would be safer and more comfortable if you wandered the streets and slept rough.

“A HELLHOLE.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2009

chaI realise its 1 star but I think thats being very generous. I arrived and squeezed into a space in a parking area where about 3 cars can fit. The hotel is essentially a few rooms above a horrible dingy pub. I told the people inside that I had booked a room and they looked at me like Id just asked 'where are all the elephants? dont you know Im and astronaut?' and then huddled together trying to work out what to do. That was pretty much the fare for the whole stay - when I asked for soap, an invoice etc...
Although I had paid online through LastMinute.com they wanted to charge me cash on arrival... and I had to pay or no room... LastMinute assured me that they had already rged me and all I would need was a booking number.
The room was bare and grim with 24hr noise from the traffic right outside the window and the water pipes. Not to mention the shouting and banging coming from inside the 'hotel' in the middle of the night.
The really fun part... I told them I was going out and would be back late, around 2am and would I need a key. None of them seemed to know. Then one piped up and said they would still be open then so it would be ok. I got back at 1.30 and the place was locked down, dark and deserted. So I hung around in the street for about 20 mins banging the door and was about to leave when some random man came walking towards me from way down the street. I told him I was staying there, I assumed he had something to do with the hotel and had seem me hanging around from his nearby house, he didnt introduce himself. He just started swearing and then took a wheelie bin and put it by the locked door and proceeded to scale the wall, climbing over and letting me in from the inside... he then disappeared off without saying much... fun!
I awoke a few times to the sounds of some other people banging the front door, obviously with the same problem as me.
I left asap the next day without a proper wash (they still hadnt sorted the soap out) and a scribbled receipt with was like getting blood from a stone.

...thats really only the half of it. DO NOT EVER EVER GO THERE, LET ALONE STAY THERE!

“Minging!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2009

Before I start, I did'nt actually stay in this hotel, I stayed in the Prince of Wales Hotel which is just up the road from the Pheonix hotel but I needed to give an opinion on it incase anyone was going to book it.
Firstly.......DONT BOTHER!!!!!
It is discusting, people drinking 9 o clock in the morning (probably still there from the night before). Fighting, windows getting smashed in, police there everynight for something or other. It's just not safe and I would'nt let my worst enemy stay there!! We called in there cos we walked past it everyday (we were there for 6 days visiting my partners daughter). We were going to have food in there but when we walked in the smell turned our stomachs so badly it put us off and we got a sudden change of appetite!! The looks that people drinking there give you are awful and really intimidating and off putting!! I think this hotel has got some serious issues and dosent deserve to be classed as a hotel. Rotherham itself is lovely and the hotel that we stayed in was lovely and we intend to go back ther in 4 weeks time. Also going to be there in August and October for a week at a time!
We travelled to Rotherham by train and the Pheonix is right opposite the train station just before you get into the town centre, When we firsr got there we got a bit lost and stopped to ask a man and woman for directions. when we told them where we were heading (Prince of Wales Hotel) he tried to get us to stay at the Pheonix, but when we looked at the outside we told them we would give it a miss. They then reluctantly gave us directions (which turned out to be the wrong directions so we got even more lost). When we got to our hotel we were staying in it turned out that the people that gave us the wrong directions were actually the owners of the Phoenix!! How spiteful and petty was that!!
Needless to stay, we wont ever be giving the Pheonix a chance after that!!
PLEASE!! DO NOT BOOK TO STAY AT THIS EXCUSE OF A HOTEL!!! if you do, you will regret it!!
