“Great food, accommodation below average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2007

We decided to book a last minute night away in Rutland with food and accommodation, our first few choices were fully booked so came across the Royal Oak in Duddington.
On arrival the pub/hotel looks very nice on the outside but is right on a busy main road, which did get quite noisy.
The inside bar and restaurant is modern but very welcoming and looks as if it has been renovated recently with comfy leather sofas, wooden floors etc.
The bedrooms however do not look as they have been, they are reached through the back of the building past the kitchens.
The main bedroom was spacious albeit the furniture a little mismatched and dated, very small TV and limited facilities e.g. no iron and ironing board.
The bathroom was very dated, blue suite and tiles and carpeted, my husband also noticed that the toilet had not been properly cleaned.
We were also only provided with a small hand towel each, after running down to the bar to ask for bath towels and iron etc. it look over 30 minutes and a reminder to get these delivered.
The food at the Royal Oak however was very good, the restaurant was fully booked and obviously popular with locals, service was quick and every course was well presented and tasty.
Breakfast the next morning was average and a little chaotic, even though there were only 3 tables occupied.
Overall I would definitely return for a meal as the pub/restaurant was very good but I wouldn't stay overnight there again.

“Very Noisy Pub”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2006

My husband and I drove by this pub and decided to stay as it looked so quaint. Room was quite nice although the bathroom was below par. The pub was exrtremly busy that night or had some sort of event going on as it was impossible to sleep for the noise. The road outside was surprisingly noisy too. Breakfast was lovely - very dark room though. Staff quite nice but room not great value for money. Maybe we struck the hotel on a bad night. lovely area.

“Disgusting accommodation”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2006

We have previously stayed at the Royal Oak and found it to be a comfortable small family run Hotel providing fair accommodation and good food at reasonable prices.

We had therefore no misgivings to book and guarantee payment in advance via Laterooms[-] for a 2 night stay.

Since our last visit the hotel has changed hands and is undergoing renovations.

The access to the guest accommodation is via the same route that the food leaves the kitchen for the restaurant. The result is that grease and food residue has been tracked up the stair carpet and into the accommodation landing. It is just so disgusting. There is a roof terrace off the accommodation landing that has been strewn with garbage and rubbish, this is in full view as one comes and goes from the rooms. Again unbelievably disgusting. The photographs only capture a small part of the overall experience.

There is just no excuse for such filth and squalour and one has to wonder what goes on behind the scenes.

We did not complain, what was the point, it was so obvious and anyone that allows this would not heed a complaint.

Having said all that, as a pub/restaurant the staff were friendly, the atmosphere comfortable and the food was good.
