“Very hospitable family run hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

Stayed here over Aug. BH W/end as a little better value than staying in Rutland which is where we wanted to take a trip to. A little out on a limb as nothing else nearby, not even another pub! That said, only a 15 min. drive into Stamford which is a great place with plenty of restaurants and not too far from Rutland for cycling and walking.

Only 5 rooms apparently which have a very "personal" almost quirky touch. Our room overlooked the front of the pub and the road but they had compensated with secondary double glazing and I have to say, it was one of the quietest hotels I had stayed in so plenty of sleep. Bed very comfortable and bathroom away from the main area which was great. Bigger than average bath so lovely for me as well as a swer over te bath. Slightly dissapointing was that there were no shelves as such to put toiletries and you had to use the mirror over the sink as there was no dressing table to sit up to put on makeup/do hair etc. This meant walking up and down the length of the bathroom to the large window sill to reach make=up/toiletries.
Had lunch on arrival in the restaurant and the food was fantastic, We were asked what time we would like our breakfast (cooked, toast plus cereal, fruit if requested, fruit juice, tea and coffee, ). We were asked if we wanted Sunday lunch and we werent sure as we wanted to explore nearby area. We were told that as we were residents, we would be treated as a priority so towards the middle of the afternoon we decided to go back for lunch so rang ahead and as they were getting low on meat joints, they put ours aside which was very thoughtful. It was lovely. Local produce used if possible and the pork can be recommended. You do have to go out of the actual restaurant to reach the rooms and the rooms are up a short staircase directly above the kitchen door which was a bit smelly on approach but they kept the fire exit door propped wide open I guess to compensate. However, cooking smells did not penetrate the room. Don't know how it would be with that door wide open in the winter though! Lovely bar area with very comfortable seating. man and wife team that were very helpful and friendly. For £80 a night B & B it was pretty reasonable. If we were in the area we would deffinitely go again. Oh, car park across a small road and the actual hotel is on both corners of a quiet road so park close to the hotel to unload baggage.

“Warm friendly pub witha few niggles”

Friendly welcome with a blazing fire in the bar. Route to the rooms not very inspiring outsde and up a cluttered staircase. Rooms(we saw our friends as well) were a bit gothic with dark wallpaper and dark lampshades. Room preparation OK except for missing cup and saucer and non functional heated towel rail on our friends room.
The food was excellent and we ate in on the 3 nights we were there. The breakfast was OK but we did beat the landlord down one morning and had to stand in the rain.
Overall a good stay in a lovely area just needs a bit of attention to detail.

“Pleasant, tradition, excellent service.”

I whisked my long term girlfriend away for her milestone birthday to The Great Oak Hotel where I more than received my money's worth. Staff couldn't do enough for us and in the evening, we went across to the hotels annual Summer Ball, with a BBQ buffet, cabaret evening and an Elvis Presley tribute act. Despite awful weather, the hotel managed to keep all guests entertained, comfortable and satisfied.
The room was more than beautiful and we were even greeted with a box of Thorntons chocolates and a big bouqet of flowers that I requested at a small price.
I can honestly say I have no complaints at all and I will return and recomment to everyone.

“Good room. Good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2010

My wife and I are travelling around UK and came across this on Late Rooms. 70£ breakfast inclusive.
More a Pub then a B&B. Room was spacious and facilities clean. Looks like recent regurb. We were tired so slept well but our room was directly over the beer garden so drinking and talking went on for awhile. Not raucous in any way though. I would however ask air a room away from beer garden.
Breakfast was lovely and amplly supplied.
Of special note is the attached restaurant which is excellent and seemed to attract many locals. A good sign.

“Lovely comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2009

We have just stayed at the Royal Oak to attend a nearby wedding. On arrival, the landlady made us feel very welcome and escourted us to our rooms personally. My only slight complaint (if you could call it that) was the way to the rooms which is out of a side door , down an alley and past the kitchens. This being said, once you reach the landing everything looks new- carpents, decor and furnishings. Our room was lovely and decorated with an elegant feel in black and grey with a very comfortable double, plus a single bed. The bathroom was large and looked new, with a lovely power shower.

In the evening we had a drink in the bar and commented on what a homely feel the place had. Breakfast the following morning was good and the Landlord was on site to prepare breakfast himself. I've no complaints to make at all about our stay. We hope to return there when visiting friends in the area in future as I think it's a little gem!
