“Country pub with lovely rooms - a rural retreat, warm welcome, good food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2011

Owners most welcoming, country pub & bar style restaurant, excellent food. Local beers, could do with more extensive wine list.
Rooms are all unique, and well furnished, need more wardrobe/hanging space. Has tea & coffee facilities.
Sizeable garden . Local area is beautiful, great for walkers.
They are dog friendly, (good dogs only) & even cooked a sausage for our Lab for breakfast :-)
Big place to manage for the owners, no shortage of service, but they probably need more staff.

“stay here if you want a dead fly on your pillow!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2010

Dear All,

I urge you all never to stay at this pub/ hotel ever. This is the only hotel experience I have ever felt the need to WARN others about.

I had not been lucky (or smart) enough to read reviews prior to my arrival. If id know what was in store for me, there is no way id have stayed. All of the bad reviews on this site already really reflect the standard and experience you get at this venue. Whoever wrote them had a very similar experience to me.

From arrival, I was left in my room (not the room id requested) given no guidance on how anything worked, meal set up or any information on the surrounding area, in which I planned to walk. The older male "owner" was aware that this was my plan, yet didnt even attempt to engage in any conversation whatsoever. I was clearly an inconvienence to him (surprising as this pub was empty my entire stay and I was paying a large amount of money for my little break).

I then discovered a total of 5 dead spiders in the room, 2 in the bathroom on full display 1 under the 2nd bed, one near the back door and one behind the curtain. In my opinion this is totally unacceptable, as it is basic cleaning. The room was dusty and it was clear that surfaces had not been wiped over for sometime.

Whilst out for the day. I expected my room to be freshened up, this did not happen. I returned to dirty coffee cups and no replacement refreshments etc. Towels were still on the floor and no biscuits were provided (as id been told when I booked).

Ate in the resturant- which I quickly regretted. Worst service I have ever received in my entire life (53years!) Simply vile! Vegetables still hard in the middle, rubbish menu choice which doesnt seem to ever change. I was the only person around (which tells you something about this place!)

All the above I could have coped with, but on awakening the last morning of my stay I discovered a dead fly on the inside of my pillow (the pillow case had rouched back in the night revelling this horror) this turned my stomach, and I hastily departed.

I did not provide the ''management'' with the opportunity to appologise (although I very much doubt the older male owner would have cared) I will however NEVER return, would never recommend the place, and URGE all who read this to not even consider a stay at this 1* hole.

As I drove away, I felt sorry for the couple who I was aware had just checked in, and reflected on the thought that a stay in the cow shed (that I could view from my bathroom) would have been a cleaner more friendlier holiday.

I was very upset and surprised to read your negative review and that you had such an awful stay in your opinion.

I suspect that the dead fly you refer to that was on your pillow was in fact a loose feather from the feather pillow!

I am confident that the room was NOT the 1* hole you refer to, especially as we receive so many compliments about the rooms, the food and the hospitality.

I trust that users of Trip Advisor will see your review is overly negative.

Apologies again for your grievances and may I respectfully suggest that next time you stay in a hotel and have any complaint PLEASE raise it at the time so the matter can be dealt with!!!!!!!

“Unacceptable standard for the price”

Having seen that it was recommended in Sawdays and the Good Food Guide we thought we would be staying in a small country pub with delightful rooms and delicious gastro-pub style food and were happy to pay a price for it, Unfortunately that was a long way from the truth. The rooms were reasonably appointed but the thick dust all around the edges of the room should have been dealt with by the most basic vacuuming. The food was dire. If we had wanted to go to a down-market chain restaurant, we would have chosen to have done so and probably would have eaten better. No-one minds simple food such as fish and chips, steaks etc but they have to be well cooked. and presented. The fresh fish, sole or cod, was served on a bed of "plastic" tasting olives and was not cooked through. It would have been futile to have complained as it was clear the owners had no idea of quality food. The orange juice and sausages at breakfast must havebeen bought at the cheapest cash and carry they could find. I completely agree with other reviewers who say that the new owners are trying to live off the previous one's reputation. However, you cannot continue to charge very high prices without providing quality of service, accomodation and food.

“Nice stay awful service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

I stayed here recently and have to say the place is nice! the room was nice! the food bit pricey but nice, biggest let down was the service.
When i go away i wish to enjoy my stay, cant say i did with the service here it was slow unwelcoming and somewhat out of charator for such a nice place.
Our waiter was was not sure what he was doin and did not seem to give us the time of day, the same person who showed us to our room who just left us there not informing us what time dinner was or even breakfast, all that was said was have a nice stay and that was in an undertoned voice of " i really dont care and dont want to be here " i think this was the owner as he was our waiter and he was on the bar all night.
We had a very nice meal to which i would have recomended if it was not for the service, we were not even asked if we would like desserts or coffee and were not given the time of day by either of the waitresses that were chatting at the end of the bar.
Have to say breakfast was not the best either, slow service by the same staff but poor quality cooked food so we packed and left after paying.
Although a fine place in charactor with nice food and rooms im afraid i could not and will not recomend to collegues or friends just purly due to the service that was here.
