My husband and I just came back from a long weekend in Somerset. We stayed at Brookfield House, a charming and spotlessly clean B & B run by Ian and Jill. I have to say, this is one of the best B & Bs we have stayed at. The service was excellent, the food was good (evening meals as well as breakfast), everything we could ask for.
The only negative point for Brookfield is location. It's a good 20 minute walk from the train station, and the only real shop/place to grab a quick drink etc, is Tesco. It's only a few minutes to walk to the high street, so that was okay, but it is along a busy road. Saying that, you can't tell once you are in the house, there was literally no noise from the road in our room and we had a great view of their gorgeous garden. Lovely!
We based ourselves in Taunton, but did not do much in town. Honestly, I didn't see much to do in town anyway. We took a day trip to Glastonbury and Wells, which were both very picturesque. On Sunday, we rode the West Somerset Railway to Minehead and Dunster. I would highly recommend Dunster, it was just magical, like stepping back in time 500 years. If you do go, have your afternoon tea and scones at Tessas, they were freshly baked and really wonderful. Steam trains and medieval villages just go together perfectly!
Ian and Jill were both really friendly and helpful, nothing seemed like too much trouble. We would definitely stay there again if we went back. It was a real pleasure.
