Being accustomed to automatic upgrades in the poshest of hotels (The Princes suite in the Trianon Palace is still my favourite), I saw the previous review as a challenge to my stamina, endurance and snobbery, that I really had to accept.
I needed a room in the area for my family, from which we could, coincidentally, attend a wedding.
My long suffering brood are used to me disregarding their health and safety to satisfy my own curiosity.
My 2 year old, Eddie, who is usually a perfect little lad, can, like all 2 year olds, be a bit of a handful on a bad day.
Following the "awful " review, this seemed just the place to ensure that if our little angel did morph into a boneless blubbery brat in the hall while I carried the bags and posh frocks upstairs, we might not have to worry about the staff peering down their noses at the damp patch left on the floor once we had scraped him up.
What a great decision it proved to be.
Admittedly with low expectations we should have been easy to impress, but the hotel proved to be very easy to find and conveniently close to the motorway, the owner Graham carried my bags unbidden up to our huge room, and he and his son proceeded to look after us all in a thoroughly unobtrusive but diligent manner. They were especially good to Eddie, who, when there were no other guests to disturb after a quality English breakfast, was allowed to explore. What a treat to have the staff preventing him feeding himself through the shoe shine machine, while we could read the Sunday papers in peace.
I don't want to belittle the opinion of the previous reviewer, who clearly enjoyed a level of service that would have left me equally as annoyed. My own experiences suggest that they have taken his service criticisms on board. I did observe that the wall paper was curling away from the wall in places, as was the paint from the ceiling in the corner; the once white woodwork was yellow and chipped around the door, and the huge enamel bath also had two chips in it, but they were not in places that interfered with the pleasures to be had in a lagre comfortable room or an enormous enamel bath of steaming bubbles, and the whole place was spacious, clean, warm and dry. The only things that would be really nice to find improved on our next stay would be a brighter light above the bathroom mirror, and a commercial quality shower head to replace the current item that was quite adequate, but could be better. They have seven shower heads in the Princes Suite at the Trianon Palace don’t you know? (oops, I think I've just failed the snobbery part of my challenge after all, damn it!)
Suffice to say, we enjoyed very good value for money, had a very pleasent stay and would love to stay again.
