We were flying from Durham Tees Valley airport and simply could not have booked in a hotel in a better location. Price for B&B allowed us to leave our car at the hotel for the week and a quick walk through the car park got us to the airport in jig-time.
The hotel is fine - a bit dated - but very clean with a great wee lassie on reception - so helpful, kind, smiley in a shy sort of way - and I wish I'd gotten her name. I'd say she'd go out of her way to make her guests stay more comfortable if you needed her to.
Our room was quite large, as was the bathroom which included a bath (I still prefer it to a shower). Cleaners do a great job.
Tea-making facilities were nicely set out on a tray with biscuits. TV and remote (working perfectly). Chair and lounging chair available - nice soft lighting.
Double glazing keeps out airport noises perfectly. I slept like a log in a real comfy bed with crisp clean sheets and didn't hear any corridor noises at all, though hubby said there was quite a bit of coming and going (but what else would you expect from a hotel situated beside an airport).
Choice of bar food was extensive and tasty and not too expensive. Restaurant was a bit pricier, so we didn't eat there, although a wedding reception was being held the day we arrived so I'm-a-thinking the chefs must present some very nice food.
In the morning at breakfast we were welcomed to our table by a lady Restaurant 'Supervisor' and asked if we wanted tea/coffee and brown or white toast - all very nice. Breakfast was buffet style - eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, toast, cereals, tinned fruit, dried fruit, fruit juices, jams - enough to stuff you to the gunnels. Friendly atmosphere and morning papers set off our breakfast very nicely, thank you.
We decided to stay overnight on our way back from holiday and same nice lassie was on reception - it was even nice to see her!
What a pity it was marred with the behaviour of the same Restaurant 'Supervisor' Marion. I'm not sure whether the name 'Maid Marion' or 'The Dragon of St George' would have been a more appropriate name for her that particular morning because of the frozen atmosphere in the restaurant; sorry to say that but if you don't like the job your doing, then don't do it!
She appeared to be in the huff with one of her male staff. She made no attempt to welcome a.n.y.o.n.e. to their table, nor did she ask if they would like tea/coffee/toast. We finally asked the guy (who Marion seemed to be in the huff with) and he brought us everything we needed. However, we didn't know that white vacuum jugs (ugh) holding tea/coffee were available from the end of the buffet table and the toast could be picked up from the servery (what a difference from our first visit). I wouldn't have carried hot cups of liquid through a dining room, but she must've thought it OK!
Breakfast was still as tasty and plentiful, but grapefruit hadn't been replenished( though I managed to scrape up enough for one). Lids had been left off a couple of the bain maries, a woman had to ask for yoghurt, and another for Earl Grey tea. One man was walking around wondering where he should sit and she never batted an eye - she just kept on setting the tables for afternoon lunch, placing name cards on certain tables while continuing to quietly argue with her male colleague (I think they must have had staffing difficulties that morning). I hope you're OK now Marion.
However please don't let all this put you of St George's in Darlington. It's a great wee place, in a great location, and if you're not looking for anything too posh, modern or upbeat it's an ideal choice for being near to the airport. I'd use it again. Sorry I didn't take any photos but the ones already available on Trip Advisor are an honest reflection of this hotel.
