“Disgusting”

At first impression it was an old fashioned place but staff was pleasant.
The lift was out of order and I had to walk up 2 flights of stairs to my room.
Once in the room, putting my clothes away in the drawer I found a carpet beetle, Only the one, but there must have been more or it wouldn't have got in there.
The bed mattress was old and uncomfortable, the bed clothes were old and not ironed. The pillows were lumpy. The towels in the bedroom were not only grey but stained, threadbare and some had holes in them.
Initially the bathroom loked reasonably clean with soaps and shower things, A box of tissues were placed in the bedroom for convenience. But when I went into the shower and pulled back the curtain, there was black mould around the bath, the grouting behind the shower was black. the shower head itself was filthy black.

“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2010

We returned, and once again found the hotel to be very friendly and excellent value. Rooms are a bit tired, but clean, beds are comfortable, and for the price paid, it really was excellent value. Breakfast is toast, fruit and cerial, and was included in the price. Lift is still out of order, so if stairs are a problem, best to contact them beforehand.

“AVOID AT ANY COST”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

Well where do I sart?
looks inside like something from the 60's...............decor is terrible.......................bathroom was filthy and had mould around the bath.......................heating was on all night as it was not possible to turn it off, sweltering heat all night.....................the towels had brown skid marks and holes..............went and asked for more towels and the guy gave me grey ones with holes in.

Our feet were sticking to the corridor and room carpets.

I can't think of anything positive to say on this place............well it was cheap and now I know why.

“Bad experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2010

I stayed at this hotel for one night with my husband and 5 year old granddaughter. My husband and I stayed last year and the condition of the room then was not too bad. This time round it was appalling. First thing the lift was out of order. This appears to be a regular occurance as seen in other reviews. The room was like a sauna and with windows opened the noise from traffic horrendous. The towels were not only threadbare but had holes in them. The mould around the bath area was disgusting. The sheets on the bed had just been thrown on top of the mattress . The room door had at one time been forced open and the panel had just been nailed on and caused us a problem when trying to lock the door. The walls were filthy and I then discovered blood smeared on the wall beside the bed. I could go on and on .....I spoke to the man on the desk and he wrote down the complaints. There was a female there too and she went up to look at the room as we were leaving. In the rush to get away I left behind a brand new bathrobe so I thought I would have received a call to say that it had been found but heard nothing from the hotel. As we had just left the room the female member of staff must have known it belonged to myself. I would certainly never use this hotel again. It was shocking........

“Improving Hotel?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

Overall the Harrowgate Hill Lodge provided my party with a good 3 night stay and I got the impression that it was a hotel that is trying to improve.

On arrival the receptionist was already in the process of making arrangements for a room change as he immediately noticed my father-in-law with his walking stick and as the lift was out of order a change was a priority. Room 008 was only just down the corridor and was similar to the photos of room 310 albeit slightly smaller. I was also asked if I wished to change.

Room 310 was on the top floor and the hot weather was reflected by the temperature in the corridor. Due to the heat the window had to be left open and with the noise from the busy A167 coupled with an uncomfortable mattress it proved to be a restless few nights.
The room itself was fine and the bathroom adequate with complimentary toiletries and enough towels. It was clean apart from some mould discolouring around the bath sealant. The shower itself was good with strong power and temperature control. Room 008 was quieter as it had a double glazed unit that could allow air in but still kept out the noise. It was distinctly cooler too.

Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided along with menus from the very good value White Horse ‘Sizzler’ Pub/Restaurant next door.

Breakfast was served in the bright, new breakfast room with modern furniture. Two sofas and tables were also available. Waitress service was provided for tea, coffee and toast and a small buffet arrangement for cereals, canned fruit, yoghurt etc. Depending on how bookings are made there may be a charge [£4.95 per person]
