Many of the hotels around Stevenage are VERY expensive. The Cromwell is a beautiful hotel but probably twice the price of the Abbington. The hotel is less than a 5 minute walk from old town Stevenage - you can walk from the hotel to The Chequers (a great pub by the way) in no more than 10 minutes. Tell them that Colin's friend, Paul the crazy Texan recommended the place. This is a classic English hotel that started out as a large house and was converted into a hotel. It has a nice little bar and a good English breakfast in the morning. The woman who serves breakfast is very friendly and can easily be talked into special requests. Frank Digrado the owner is also helpful, acommodating and very friendly. I don't know about the other rooms but the one I had was recently redone by the looks and was reasonably sized by English standards. I would recommend avoiding a room at the front of the hotel because of possible traffic noise. My room was neat, clean, quiet.
For the value a great place to stay in Stevenage.
