My boyfriend and I rarely complain and are always happy go lucky people. After 2 nights for our anniversary at the Gatehouse we left a little fed up...actually alot fed up. We read the reviews first but I have to disagree with any 5/5 ratings.
The location was ok but the website is mis-leading. You will need to walk for a steady paced 40 mins into town, get a bus or a cab. There is nothing local to do near to the hotel. It is pretty (typically for a period house in this area) and has ample parking. Convenient to access.
Our room was large and had an amazing bed but the room was not 3 star. Our room did not get made up for our 2nd night stay and we had to use bottled water to make Tea or Coffee. As our room had not been cleaned on the sat day time we had to ask for more water (never mind toilet roll). Pretty enough inside its just a shame that the stairwell is a dumping ground for the housekeeper.
The reception staff are friendly but the breakfast service really lets them down. The tables are too small to hold the amount of tableware and we found ourselves utilizing the nearby radiator to make some room to enable us to pick up our cutlery. There was a good selection of cereal to choose from and yoghurts but the brioche had been left out and was stale plus there was no way to cut it without everybody using their bare hands to hold the loaf - not my ideal.
When we were asked if we would like tea/coffee & toast it took fifteen minutes to have the toast brought to the table (we did get the tea and filter coffee sooner than that) no butter on the table and when it was brought out it was hard. Then we were asked if we wanted a cooked breakfast, that then took another 15 mins and when it did arrive the top side of my sausage was cooked and the bottom raw. Scrambled eggs were one large mass but the bacon was nice.
The next morning we ordered toast before we even sat down, it came quicker and there was butter on the table. Coffee and tea came after that (not filter this time - no idea why) and breakfast had half the amount of bacon, poached eggs were ok but the fried was not appetizing and the bonus - a raw sausage. We asked for a cooked one and they barely acknowledged the request then re appeared 10 mins later with a black miserable thing. It was not good enough considering the star grading of this hotel and even I can make a half decent breakfast.
Wine is £16 a bottle (tastes like supermarket own brand) and the glasses we were given were dirty. Overall Im surprised they can charge what they do for what they provide, especially as you pay a charge for any room service or morning papers. For what we received as an over all experience it would have been better to pick a central B&B. I would say that there are several far more enjoyable places to spend your time & money in pretty Ipswich town.
