I work as a coach driver, and had to stay in this hostel twice now. Both times have been as bad as the first, and cant imagine the next time will be any better. SOME of the rooms are nice enough, but if you're not a private booking individual, you'll be in the same hutches as the rest of the rats. I've travelled a LOT in my career - but can honestly say this ranks among the worst ever. The place is quite literraly falling apart - from the crumbling masonry at the front, the subsidence, leaking roof, dodgy plumbing, erratic hot water supply, TCP sprinkled everywhere to mask the smell of damp and a lift that's as old as the hotle itself. Food is adequate in portion size, but every possible corner, every penny-pinching scheme has been used to bring it down from 'good' to 'you're actually serving this?!'... instant mash, cheap bread, stale rolls, thin custard. And the staff seem to take it in turns cooking - the porter is the waiter is the cook is the manager is the barman is the receptionist. Some guests said to me they thought it was great - others despised the place. I concluded that those in favour might just have far lower expectations and standards than is the norm in the year 2010 (its not 1910 after all). Make no mistake - this is one baaad hotel. You might leave thinking you've had a nice time - but in my experience, you'll be in the minority. If you're travelling independantly - keep driving, there are better places around for the same money, and given the fact that the owners have had this place for around 20 years, there's no excuse for letting it get as bad as it has, or standards slip as low as they have.
