This is a hotel on the up. You can see from some of the slightly faded decor and occasional cigarette burn that it has been recently used for coach parties.
But they have discovered the internet and raised their game. We had room 3 at the bottom of the stairs and I was a little worried about the noise, but it wasn't an issue. The bathroom was new and clean. The main room was a good size and also clean, with a large wardrobe. At £68 a night, the double rooms are dangerously close in cost to the budget chains, but the single rooms at £34 are very good value.
The breakfast was a minimalist full english with cereal and toast - but enough, and good quality with very friendly staff who took pride in their work. The main proprietor was also very welcoming and friendly and made an effort to make our stay comfortable. We wished they'd had wifi and they should probably consider it for the more mass-market traveller.
So in summary, we had a good experience at this hotel - the building and people had character and we'd stay there again.
