“great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2011

We had a very small bathroom ok if you were very thin and short, the size was 32'' wide x 84 deep but apart from that it was very good. The food was excellent a great choice and a lot of it, the breakfast had a good choice as did the evening meal. We were a party of 30 and every one was full of praise for the food, also for the staff who were very help full. The owner of the hotel also has a beef and sheep farm so only the best for his hotels. Agreat hotel but don't book room 212 with a sea view

“Nice hotel in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2010

Just got back from a week in Eastbourne staying at this hotel the bar and restaurant areas are very good and lots of space food was good service all round was polite and helpful the only real gripe i had was that the single rooms are small and narrow but im only 5ft 11 so wasnt that much of a problem but taller people may have an issue overall a very nice hotel with very good service

“not disabled friendly.........”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2009

well to start with was told it was fully equipped for disabled people WRONG.. it had steps to enter with no ramp, stair lifts that didnt work and the lift was like a match box, had to almost take wheelchair to bits to enter. We had 4 rooms, sea view twin room 110 was a lovely size but had no fan so was 90* hot ,other room 112 was tiny with small a bathroom u could just get into, sink in 116 was so big it took up most of bathroom and looked like it could fall to peices if you touched it!! Then the last room 312 was a sea view room which was an a bit on the small size and you were hit with an awful smell of rotten drains from the toilet and mould from the shower!
We asked to eat in the resturant at 6pm ( it opens at 6.30 pm ) were told yes so waited in the bar, then someone appeared and said sorry the chef says NO , not enough food, we couldn't believe a hotel with not enough food to cater for paying guests!
So we had a lovely meal elseware and went to a great show Gotta Sing Gotta Dance.
On return to the hotel gagging for a drink got inside ( wheelchair aswell ) to be told sorry no drink BAR SHUT!!!! !) 10.30 at night and bar shut. After a few choice words we left to have a drink at the very friendly Cavendish hotel next door.
I could not believe we couldnt eat and drink in a hotel we paid to stay in.
We were celebrating my mother's 75th birthday and my wedding anniversary and it was a trip down memory lane for my parents as they had their honeymoon in Eastbourne 55years ago.
This hotel needs a complete facelift it smells and everything is tacky and cheap.
I wouldnt send my worst enemy there!!!

Firstly, please let me apologise for your negative experience during your stay at The Albany Lions Hotel. Thank you very much for bringing it to my attention.

Regrettably the hotel is not best suited to those with mobility problems. We are in a conservation area and are unable to convert the building externally to allow easier access. We do have a stair lift within the hotel, unfortunately this was out of service during you stay. We never advertise the hotel as 'wheelchair friendly'.

With regards to bedrooms. Most guests in this particular party were upgraded to sea-view rooms at no additional charge. Unfortunately they did not make us aware of any problems with the rooms at the time leaving us unable to rectify the problems they experienced.

We operate a Carvery Restaurant within the hotel which opens at 6.30pm. We were unable to open early as the carvery was not quite ready. At 5.30pm the guests asked for dinner at 6.00pm. They should have been informed that it was not available at the time. Please accept our apologies for this unfortunate mix up. The bar was closed at 10.15pm on the evening in question as we believed all guests had retired for the evening. Clearly this was not the case and once again we apologise.

Please be assured that we take all complaints seriously and action all negative comments/feedback we receive.

“Successful event despite some shoddy service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2009

Background

The hotel is part of the Lions hotels group in Eastbourne.

We chose the hotel as it had a nice suite of rooms to host a party (ballroom, lounge and private bar).

Booking / Reservations

Some of my guests had problems with making their reservations for rooms as they were told that either the hotel was full or the ‘party’ not heard off. I reserved my room a year before the party was due to take place but was annoyed (to put it mildly) when I turned up on the day of the party to be told there wasn’t a room booked in my name.

Check in

Check –in was marred by not having my promised room. I was offered an alternative double room (inferior sea view room to the one promised – see under rooms). The receptionist took details of my complaint but the hotel was not proactive afterwards in writing to me to apologise – I had to write to them to complain and solicit a response from management. Some guests complained that reception staff seemed more keen on talking internally on the phone rather than dealing with them.

Bedroom

There is a difference in quality of double rooms charged at the same price. Room 308 was the inferior room we were offered – the bathroom was quite small as was the room relative to something like the room I was anticipating Room 311. This was a larger room and larger bathroom with fridge, Jacuzzi and superior toiletries. We ended up in this room as we swapped with a relation.

The room was quite clean but in need of some minor maintenance eg no chains attached to plugs in basin/bath.

Whilst the hotwater in the morning was sufficient for my purposes provided no cold was run my partner found that the water was not hot enough

Function rooms

These were quite spacious for our requirements but the suite of rooms was meant to include a private bar for the function which was not available on the day.

Staff/Service

This was somewhat poor. Some guests overheard the bar staff in the hotel’s main bar complaining that the party guests weren’t buying much which we didn’t think was particularly good. There was a problem with space over the quantity of food being laid out because of some flower arrangements – the staff member concerned was not proactive in dealing with the matter. At breakfast orders for coffee/tea were taken without telling anyone that all the food including the cooked breakfast had to be self service. We weren’t impressed either by the receptionist at check stating in that my experience of not having a room was not an isolated incident and that omissions and lack of communication from your function department to the hotel is common place.

Food

We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of the food that was provided for our buffet function. The buffet was hot and cold on a pick your own basis.

Breakfast consists of a choice of the usual fayre - help yourself cereals/ fruit/fruit juice followed by a cooked breakfast which you had to help yourself and toast also help yourself.

Business services

Didn’t notice any internet connection in the bedrooms.

Location

The hotel is situated on Eastbourne seafront.

In common with most hotels in the town the hotel does not have guest car parking (there is a small service car park at the rear where function entertainers can offload/park with the agreement of the hotel). The hotel does however provide you with a parking permit which is valid in the side roads (not the seafront). Finding a parking space may be problematic in the summer if people flock to the coast though at the time of our function most people were able to park quite close by.

Value for Money

If you get a decent sized room then the price per room is probably similar to other establishments in the area.

“Great location and good hotel if you book at the right price per night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2009

Nice place to stay and good value if, like me, you get a room for around £40 per night including breakfast. There are of course many hotels in Eastbourne and competition drives down the prices if you shop around. This hotel is very popular with elderly guests so don't expect a lively time but it is both comfortable and clean. No wifi which is odd but maybe that's because of the age profile of guests, although a wifi router is hardly a big investment nowadays even if few guests use or have a computer. Good location but no car park although there are concessionary rates for hotel guests in the side streets nearby
