“What's not to like?”

I can't believe some of the negative reviews I've read on this perfectly pleasant hotel. We stayed there recently after visiting a friend nearby and yes, it needs a coat of paint, but you can't fault it on its excellent seafront location and proximity to all local amenities. The staff were friendly and helpful, the price reasonable and the room was fine. A good breakfast was had by all, we would certainly stay there again. Just one small moan (and the Albany Lions is far from being the only hotel guilty of this) - why is there nowhere to put your soap and shampoo when you're in the shower?

“I'd return”

I was there for a short 2 night break with my teenage son. when we arrived we were waiting for 15 minutes to be served because there appeared to be only one person on duty. When served he gave me the key and when I looked at my ticket I noticed it was for a double room (I'd ordered a twin). When I mentioned this he was a little rude to begin with but sorted the problem very quickly and found us an alternative room within minutes. I lugged my heavy case up 4 flights of stairs - I wasn't offered any help and if I had been told it was up a lot of stairs I would have asked for help. Disappointingly there was only decaffeinated coffee in the room. Overall though my stay was comfortable - apart from the occasional rumble from the heating, room and en-suite we clean and smart, beds comfortable and breakfast delicious! I'd go again.

Room Tip: ask for help carrying your bag up the stairs.

Went to this hotel for a ballroom dancing weekend. On a positive note, it has a great ballroom with sprung floor. However, this hotel does need a lot of money spent on it. Our bedroom was old fashioned with a tiny bathroom. Cracked tiles were a feature and you had to be careful you didn't hit your head on the sink when sitting on the loo!! The restaurant was just ok but we can certainly recommend the roast beef and yorkshire. The hotel is ideally situated right across from the sea and parking wasn't a problem in the adjacent side road with vouchers costing £1 per day (free on Sunday), obtained from reception.

Room Tip: Ask for a big room overlooking the sea on the second floor.

“Enjoyable”

Went there for a week on a coach trip from Wales and at the same time there was a coach load in from Yorkshire too (not too fond of Yorkshire dwellers since 1968 when one of them charged me half a crown to use his phone in an emergency for a 4p local call and Geoffrey Boycott , of course, speaks for himself) thus the hotel was full if somewhat wrinkly. Our rooms were fine but there was no view in either of them - (although there are many sea views at the hotel as it's location is excellent.) The hotel was clean including the bedrooms and looked good despite a certain peculiar laxity in the matter of decorating which I had noticed in it's sister hotel the Chadwick, just up the road. It is almost as if the owners had given some simple painting work to an incompetent or disinterested relative just to keep him busy. For example there were dabs of paint on some of the light fittings or on the walls. These blemishes are not glaringly obvious just surprising, so don't let it put you off.
The food was a carvery and was very good with reasonable choice although safe. The group has its own farms and uses fresh produce from the farms in its kitchens. I heard only one criticism of the food which concerned alleged undercooking of the broccoli. But we were from Wales and 'undercooked vegetables ' are regarded as a hideous offence.
Breakfast, self service, was excellent. At first I was extremely worried about the positioning of a toasting machine right at the start of the buffet line. I thought it would screw up the whole advancing line as increasing knots of decrepits gathered round the toaster unable to move on until their two slices had dropped down like tickets to the rest of the show. However to my utter amazement the whole thing worked smoothly and without hold ups.
The TV's in the rooms were modern, flat screen and with very poor reception but that didnt bother us.
The making up of the room each day was carried out efficiently and invisibly.
I would recommend it as a hotel in an excellent location, clean with good food and at reasonable cost.
