“5* Service and Quality from a 3* Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We booked this hotel for a special occasion family Sunday luncheon, and stayed for days before and after in the hotel. From the moment we first started communication prior to arriving, I felt we were dealing with true professionals. Once we arrived this was more than confirmed. The staff were at all times very helpful, and attended to all our needs without fuss. We had an excellent room, as did my other guests, which was on the front of the Hotel.
We found the food of excellent quality, and good value for money. Having frequented many hotels claiming higher star ratings, this one deserves very high praise indeed.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room on the front.

“Food quality and service awful.”

I recently went for lunch at the Lansdowne and was appalled at the quality of food and service received. The food was cold and the potatoes hard, and the staff were unhelpful, with limited grasp of the English language. Drinks orders were continually wrong and a staff member was sarcastic and rolled his eyes when I informed him of the mistake and requested a new drink.
Considering that we had pre-booked for a group of twelve and spent over £200 on food and drinks I felt underwhelmed by the meal, so much so that our party subsequently moved to a local pub and ordered further meals in order to feel full!

“Fantastic position”

From the moment we arrived to the minute we left we felt nothing was too much trouble. Our cases were small but we were still offered help to carry them up to the room. Staff were polite and friendly at all times - room was slightly tired but cleaned each day. Hotel is undergoing refurbishment but this was carried out quietly and seemed to us efficiently and did not disturb our stay at all. Once overhaul is complete I would happily give this hotel an "excellent" rating.

Bar food was of an excellent quality and beautifully served. Prices were very reasonable.

We have visited Eastbourne many times over the years but this is the first time we have stayed at this hotel. Would definitely stay there again.

“Not Pet Friendly at ALL as advertised on website”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011
1

I have a small dog and your website shows that you offer many award winning Pet Friendly hotels. Your website says that restrictions apply and to check before booking. I checked the hotel in Eastbourne was Pet Friendly and the website said that it was and telephoned to make a reservation. Whilst making the booking the operator phoned the hotel to confirm with them that pets were allowed and I was advised that they did and this would be an additional £7.00 per night. I said that this was fine and proceeded with the booking. I received an e-mail confirmation which clearly shows that we would be bringing a small dog with us.

When we arrived to check-in, I said we had a small dog with us and the receptionist was quite abrupt and said had we booked it? I explained that we had and showed her a copy of the e-mail confirmation. She said well that will be an extra £7.00 per night. I said yes I know that and again showed her a copy of the e-mail where it told me that. She said the dog was not allowed in any of the public areas. She then again quite abruptly said have we bought food and a bowl as this was not provided.

The website also states that a bed and bowl would be made available for our pet. Again there was nothing in the room. The handbook in the room states – You are respectfully reminded that your dog is NOT allowed in Public Rooms, neither on the bed or armchair in your bedroom. Any cleaning or damage incurred will be chargeable. This is not exactly Pet Friendly language.

This is what your website says - To make sure our non dog-owning guests are still as happy, relaxed and comfortable as ever, pet friendly hotels dedicate rooms specifically for guests travelling with dogs AND rooms which are never used to accommodate pets. We have also invested in the latest vacuum cleaners designed specifically to cope with pet hairs to make sure our rooms are always of the same standard as those throughout the rest of the hotel.

The whole point of the trip away was to spend a nice relaxing weekend away with our pet. We could not have a drink or anything to eat in the hotel because we were not allowed to take the dog into the public areas. Whilst I fully understand that dogs cannot go into the restaurant area, I do not see why we couldn’t have taken her into one of the lounges or the bar to have a drink and something to eat. At breakfast we had to put her in the car whilst we ate. We then rushed our breakfast and didn’t fully enjoy it as we didn’t want to leave her for too long. The whole point of taking your pet on holiday with you is because you don’t want to leave them! In the evening we then had to wander around a town that was new to us to try and find a dog friendly pub in order that we would get some dinner.

The main reason for booking with Best Western was that your website advertises that you are Pet Friendly. If you are going to advertise and market that you are ‘Pet Friendly’ you really need to review your hotel s. I do not feel I could stay at one of your hotels again with my pet. I have been ill recently and I was looking forward to this weekend away with my dog as a nice treat and break and it was spoilt.

I hope you look onto my comments and look forward to your reply.

I was very sorry to read your comments regarding your recent stay at the hotel and hope that you have received my email I sent.

I again apologise for the confusion with regard to your reservation and the welcome you were given upon arriving at the hotel, this is certainly not the standard of service we expect from our staff and are now implementing further Customer Service training for all Front of House personnel.

As per my email, I am sure you will appreciate that many people are allergic to animals and are often afraid of dogs. We feel that we have a duty to provide a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for all our guests, whether dog owners or not.

Many thanks
