My husband and I stayed at the Ellesmere one night during a few-week trip across the UK. Many of the other reviews seem to indicate a very different experience than we had, so perhaps we caught the hotel on an off day or we got the room they only rent when booked to the max (to give the benefit of the doubt).
We booked our room the morning of our stay and possibly took the last room they had (all other hotels were booked solid). Given the price we paid, the condition of the room, and the service, I might have considered saving the money and sleeping in the rental car.
I can look past many things when I am booking a hotel last minute in a tourist-popular location--furnishings that are old, dated, mismatched--even worn. I can understand poor views out the window, cramped run-down bathrooms, and postage-stamp-size TVs with 2 channels. I can understand bedding that looks like its ready for retirement. Unfortunately, the Ellesmere suffered from all of these.
But, dirty bathrooms and hair (not mine) on thin scratchy blankets? Moldy smell? Stains on the upolstery and furniture with sticky surfaces? Carpets that looked like they hadn't been vacuumed in a few years? Not being asked how your stay was when checking out (we didn't see a soul at the front desk, but were instructed by the waitress in the breakfast room that we could leave the key with her)? These are all things that are easy to do and not very costly to implement.
The Ellesmere did have two things going for it...breakfast was plentiful and had lots of choices. And, it was a few minutes walk to the beach and pier.
Other than that, you may want to avoid this one.
