“A little old-Noway Character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

I chose the Det Hanseatiske at the suggestion of a colleague in Bergen. I usually stay at one the chains in Norway- seen one, seem them all. It was an interesting place to stay and the room was first rate.

The Det Hanseatiske is a merger of some very old buildings with some modern additions. The layout is a bit odd as a consequence but, the place has lots of character. Finding my room was a project. The room itself was excellent. Facilities are minmal, with a retaurant and bar. I only had breakfast there, which was good.

The location is terrific, right by the waterfront, with lots of shopping, restaurants, and activities close by. It's a little hard to find. Take to Flybus, get off at the Fish Market stop. and you are 5 minutes from the hotel.

Looking for the non-chain hotel experience in Bergen, consider the Det Hanseatiske. The price was competitive with the chains.

“Nice but not excellent”

On the positive side, a lovely welcome from Erik, who spoke perfect English (like most Norwegians), a quirky and pleasant room with comfortable and modern amenities. On the negative side, at breakfast the young female waitress and young female cook were not in the slightest bit interested in us at breakfast: no greeting, no acknowledgment at all. If the restaurant was busy I'd almost understand - but we were the only people (2) at breakfast! Sadly when I was serving myself at the buffet, the girls were either talking to each other or the waitress was reading her book and eating something from the buffet. The only other downside is that it is very noisy outside during the night with party-goers leaving pubs. They give you earplugs gratis - I guess it's a common thing. Wallpaper in the common corridors could do with some maintenance and the room itself slightly poorly done (from a trades perspective), but those things are easily overlooked. Sadly, wouldn't stay there again, but only because of the non-service in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with less street noise from party-goers

“Cute, quirky, gothic like, in a UNESCO world heritage site”

I simply cannot believe this place is not mentioned in some of the big guide books, this little place (only 16 rooms) is attached to the Hanseatic Museum and three restaurants in Bryggen and is literally right on the waterfront. You can get to the funicular (2 minute walk) up to the top of Mt Floyen, where there is also a restaurant, and just enjoy the amazing views, then enjoy the walk down which is about 45 minutes ....the reception desk is just a table in the quirky lobby which also has an open fire and a bar in a cupboard. The staff are amazingly helpful organising cabs for me. I had the super deluxe room which was quite huge, separate couch / table and seating area, mini bar nicely stocked, the comfiest bed I have EVER slept in, roll top bath with full compliment of toiletries, exposed beams and wonky floors give this the historical feel. A little bit more expensive than some of the other hotels but worth every penny. In the very centre of town near great little cafes / restuarants and fish market. You can get a boat to tour the fjords only 1 minute walk away, complimentary breakfast hot and cold buffet yum yum... super quirky, definite for couples ..... loved it.

Room Tip: i had super deluxe, but reckon any would be fab

“Rustic Charm - UNESCO Heritage site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

Nestled behind the Hanseatic Museum along the Bryggen Waterfront in Bergen, heritage listed timber hotel refurbished with all modern cons but still keeping the uneven floors, the rustic beams and overall appeal of an historical building. 200 metres to the famous fishmarket, 500 metres past the traditional timber homes to the royal fortress of days gone by. Quaint shopping streets and loads of history. City larger than anticipated, about 26,000 people. Railway up Mt Floyen, fabulous panoramic views of the city and harbour then pleasant walk downhill. My deluxe room offered huge bedroom and bathroom & beautiful European fittings. Train to Oslo cancelled due to fire on the line, hotel staff most helpful in arranging air travel for me. (Tricky to find hotel entrance due to building works at museum but that would be completed by now). Bus to airport about 5oo metres away, lift helps with luggage, "bar" in foyer if you ask for a drink, open fire, huge comfy lounges - nice atmosphere. In addition to Hotel restaurant, other Restaurants & Takeaway food are on your doorstep.

Room Tip: Book on line and well in advance. This hotel is always booked out.

“Very enjoyable, very friendly”

Very unique old hotel which has mostly been redone. We loved the wood floors and wood ceiling in the bedroom. The owner who checked us in could not be more friendly and even offered that we could wait in the breakfast area and get something to eat while we waited for our room since we arrived early. I loved our bathroom which was all updated and large. The bedroom floor was slanted however due to this being an old building but it added to the charm. We were lucky that it was cool when we were there because there is no air conditioning. We opened the windows wide for fresh air and unfortunately could hear loud talking from the street for a short time. We were so tired it did not bother us.
The bed has separate duvet covers on the bed (2 total).
We loved their free buffet breakfast in the morning which was nicely presented.
There are 4 different styles of restaurants in the building and we tried the Mexican one which was excellent.
Location was excellent. Right in the center of the shopping and restaurants near the waterfront. We were able to book a boat ride to view the Fjords just a 5 minute walk away.
We were also able to walk to the train station to take a train to Oslo. The walk was about 12 minutes.
My pluses are the friendly owners who checked us in and checked us out and were able to give us a lot of information. The large updated bathroom and the uniqueness of the building, the nice breakfast, the location, free wi-fi and most important, the cleanliness.
My negatives are if it was a really hot day, there would be no air conditioner, and on our last day there we showed up early for breakfast because we had a train to catch and the server made a big deal about it. The owner however apologized for her behavior.

Room Tip: Not sure if all the rooms have been updated so it is best to ask. Also, ask for a room that is not f...
