“A great place to stay in the heart of Bergen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

I went to the hostal with a group of students from my school as part of a Comenius meeting. We weren't the only ones, there were a total of 70 of us for that visit. The hostal staff were helpful and easy to talk with. Its rooms are clean and generous, They don't have any luxuries but then, it is a hostal. At least all the rooms are newly furnished and warm.

Best of all the location, the hostal is in the heart of Bergen a stone's throw from everywhere. All in all recomendalbe if you want a hostal.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that looks out onto the square, the higher up the better.

“Pretty acceptable with a couple of issues”

I stayed at YMCA for a night. I had no booking, so I was happy to know that they had spare rooms. The check in was really fast and they provided us with clean bed sheets free of charge. The room had it's own bathroom and little kitchen, both of which were clean.. Also, the hostel is offering free wifi. For those that didn't have laptops, they had a computer room. However, the computers were out of order when I was there, so I didn't have internet access. Also, there was no warm water in the shower.
Overall, pretty acceptable for its price. No warm water and computers out of order excluded it was pretty good. And the free linen were a plus. Though Bergen is quite small, YMCA is really well located. Just a stone's throw from the harbour, the fish market and Bryggen. I would stay again.

“Good location, clean, spacious room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2010

We had 3 people in four person room and were by ourselves for the first two nights. The room had it's own bathroom and kitchenette, and a window overlooking the roof terrace. the bathroom was quite large, but prone to flooding.

The location was excellent for sightseeing and wandering to restaurants and cafes. The staff were helpful without being exceptional. Internet can be purchased at reception. There's a cute guest book in the common area, where you can read previous guests' messages. There's a supermarket across the street and a laundry up the road.

A good place to explore Bergen from.

“6 Person Room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

The other 4 people in our room were considerate, so we slept pretty well. There's free wifi and the kitchen had everything we needed to make dinner, and their breakfast (which costs an extra 65 NOK per person per morning) was great and very filling. The hostel is located within sight of the tourist information building, and less than a 5 minute walk from the Bryggen. The 6 person room was bearable for 2 nights, though I wouldn't have wanted to sleep in the main dorm area after reading the reviews. If we went back, we'd pay the extra for a private room, to avoid having to tiptoe around in the mornings and nights.

“Overpriced and definately not value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

We had booked for 5 nights but left after 2- the 32 bed dorm was unventilated and stuffy, the lights never went off during the night, and was really noisy. Barely got any sleep. The fridge in the kitchen smelled of rotten fish and clearly hadnt been cleaned out in a very long time. The bathroom facilities were borderline clean, the female showers were simply one room with shower heads where you had to press a button and got about 30 seconds of water- which made showering difficult as you had to constantly have your hand on the button. Toilets were all unisex, which meant they werent very clean at all. We met some really nice people there and hung out with them even after we changed hostels, which was nice, the communal areas were good places for socialising. Definately overpriced for the poor quality services.
