“Friendly and Cheap place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2009

I enjoyed a lot my journey to Norway. Everything was perfect. In Bergen we stayed in Gullaksen Guesthouse and it was a very pleasant stay. Mrs Gullaksen was very nice and the place had the basics - was confortable, clean and not noisy altough it is located in downtown. If i ever come back to Bergen (hope so), i will probably go again to Gullaksen.
When we arrived the key for the room was in the mail box. The main door had a locker but we knew the code for open it because Mrs. Gullaksen sent it by e-mail.
I say again, everything was perfect!

“A bit odd, but cheap”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2006

I hope this review is for the right place -- the address is the same, we just had heard it called the Gullaksen Guesthouse.

This was a bit of an odd stay, but it was very cheap (300kn/night for 2), so we have no complaints. Our room had a folded out futon-type mattress on the floor instead of a real bed, so I think it was fine for us for one night (and I think that's why it's less than the other rooms, which I believe have beds), but I would not have wanted to stay longer. Bedroom was quite clean, but our shared bathroom was a little bit grimy in the shower. We splurged the next night at a guesthouse for 600kn, and that was a welcome relief. But if you need to go cheap, this is a fine option.

“A mixed bag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2006

We were both content and disappointed with our stay at Gullaksen Gjesthouse.

In some ways it exceeded our expectations, namely because of the friendly owner. She helped us when we had questions, and she DID OUR LAUNDRY at no charge. She didn't provide us with a washer and dryer -- she took a bag of dirty clothes in the morning and returned it to us clean that night. Wow!

In other ways it met our expectations. It was as spartan as we expected. It had a certain 'garage sale' quality to the minimal and fairly battered furnishings, but it was clean. I'm attaching a photo of our room, which was one of the few with an en suite 3/4 bath.

And in some ways we were disappointed. The beds felt like a boxspring without a mattress pad on top and they were encased in scratchy terrycloth bedding, and the location was very loud each night due to nearby bars, bands, and their partying patrons.

Had the price been lower (maybe about 20-25 percent less), we would have felt that the incoveniences were worth the bargain. But even given the skewed definition of "affordable" in Norway, Gullaksen felt about a bit overpriced compared to the other options in Bergen. Next time we will likely choose a private home B&B, where you get more bang for the buck, without losing the extra kindness of the owner that we so greatly appreciated at Gullaksen.

“Affordable Bergen”

Stayed 4 nights in August 2004. Spartan but affordable double room (550NOK/night) with private bathroom. No breakfast included. Reasonable location, about 12 mins walk from train station. What more can I say - nothing's cheap in Norway (that's saying something - we live in London)!
