We were both content and disappointed with our stay at Gullaksen Gjesthouse.
In some ways it exceeded our expectations, namely because of the friendly owner. She helped us when we had questions, and she DID OUR LAUNDRY at no charge. She didn't provide us with a washer and dryer -- she took a bag of dirty clothes in the morning and returned it to us clean that night. Wow!
In other ways it met our expectations. It was as spartan as we expected. It had a certain 'garage sale' quality to the minimal and fairly battered furnishings, but it was clean. I'm attaching a photo of our room, which was one of the few with an en suite 3/4 bath.
And in some ways we were disappointed. The beds felt like a boxspring without a mattress pad on top and they were encased in scratchy terrycloth bedding, and the location was very loud each night due to nearby bars, bands, and their partying patrons.
Had the price been lower (maybe about 20-25 percent less), we would have felt that the incoveniences were worth the bargain. But even given the skewed definition of "affordable" in Norway, Gullaksen felt about a bit overpriced compared to the other options in Bergen. Next time we will likely choose a private home B&B, where you get more bang for the buck, without losing the extra kindness of the owner that we so greatly appreciated at Gullaksen.
