“a grand hotel restaured in all its details”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

The hotel has been beautifully restaured maintaing all its historical details. It offer a great reception area where to rest and have tea or coffee whenever one returns from the cold. The hotel is in a great location in walking distance to the city centre, and offer a good service. Great breakfast. The room (double room with two single beds) on the third floor was spacious, with armachairs and a desk. Very warm, spacious and functional bathroom. The single beds were narrow but comfortable.

“Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

An ideal location if you travel by train. Take right exit from train station, next to luggage lockers, across the street, and there you are. And Bergen downtown is not big, it'll take only a few mins walk to Torgalmenningen.
Hotel dates back to 1928, a time when every hotel in Norway of some standing called themselves Grand. Spacious bar area, recommended for choices of whiskey. A 2cl will cost you 80 NOK. No foreign papers, but January is out-of-season. 2 windows-pc with free internet available in "Skrivestua" (The writing room) on other side of lobby. You just occupy if free, not necessary to ask reception.
My room was about 15 sq meters, wardrobe area about 4. Tiny, very tiny bathroom, free area 2x3 ft. Washstand, toilet and shower. Shower is also not more than 2x3 ft, gives room for two at the same time, if you stand close-close.
Dead flies in the ceiling lighting in wardrobe, I gave management notice of this, the first time i've seen such in a hotel.
When I entered the 150 seat breakfast room at nine the boiled eggs were lukewarm. No egg&bacon. Coffee tasted bad, I switched to instant. Decaf instant only.
All in all, recommended, mostly because of location.

“Historic and grand hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

This hotel was occupied by the German officers during the second world war and they took very good card of it. It has a grand large sitting room with coffee/tea served all the time and a bar in the corner. Great place to read or rest after a full day of sightseeing. The front desk people were very friendly and helpful and the restaurant was very good. Convenient if you arrived by train as it is right across the street yet in a good part of the city, walkable to town center, museums and restaurants and quiet which you do not expect.

“Good location, Nice reception area, small rooms and narrow beds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

The reception is old fashioned english style, and the hotel has an amacing whisky bar. The main drawback is the tiny rooms (particularly the tiny bathrooms) with the narrow beds. Good, central location though. Congress facilities are ok but not magnificent.

“Unassuming elegance and comfort, and whisky!”

This hotel is an absolute gem. It is not cheap - but then, nothing is in Norway, and at least here I felt I was actually getting value for money. Highlights: the usual tiny and functional Scandinavian bathroom but with lovely underfloor heating (so important for a January visit), absolutely stunning breakfast (drinking yogurt! artisan breads! meats and fish! not a bowl of cornflakes in sight!), tasteful décor, and the undisputable jewel in its crown and I think Bergen's crown as well, the superlative Whisky Bar. This gorgeous, cosy, wood-panelled, leaded-glass-windowed, candle-filled room does what it says on the tin. It is a bar that serves whisky, more or less to the exclusion of anything else. I estimated about 200 malts on the shelves, some of them quite rare indeed, and was not at all surprised to hear the bar had won awards. For this whisky hound it was something of a die-and-go-to-heaven experience. Go for the breakfast, stay for the whisky!
