“Not particularly good, but good enough for Bergen.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

Bergen is a very expensive city, even for Scandinavia. This hotel is far, far away from the interesting parts of town, but if you have a car it offers a cheaper option than the mad prices of the city. At best, it's still an overpriced, average equivalent of an American 2-star hotel.

But before I go into details, let me first let me put my review in context of my own background: I'm a well-traveled American, and I tend to review hotels based on North American standards (because, as we know, "3 stars" in Europe would often be a low "2 star" in North America or Australia/New Zealand). I just finished a rapid fire trip across Scandinavia and the Baltic that involved ten different hotels, so this review is also taken in context of other similar options in the region.

The hotel, like the airport, is located far from the main city. I drove in from the Sognefjord, NE of town (on my way from Oslo) and it took a full 30 minutes to get to the hotel once I entered Bergen. Once you're at the hotel, it's more of a 20 minute drive into the historic downtown (e.g. Bryggen). Thankfully, if offers free parking and is easy to find. The lobby is sterile but not uninviting. The staff was pleasant.

The room was pretty bare bones. The bathroom was very spartan. They did not supply enough towels for two people and they use tacky wall-mounted soap dispensers for everything. The shower was okay. The room uses a central climate control that you have no way of controlling. Terrible idea, but some hotels in Scandinavia have this issue. The hotel did have free wifi.

The breakfast was okay --very average by the standards of the other Scandinavian and Baltic hotels we sampled on our trip. This hotel is very popular with large tour groups, so their coaches litter the parking lot (eliminating spaces) and they can make breakfast and check-out a nightmare if you don't get out before they do.

The hotel is just too expensive for the quality offered. This is the equivalent of a low rent Ramada. The location is terrible if you don't have a car. As such, I just can't recommend it.

“Great Food For Average Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2010

This hotel is several miles from the airport, does not have a shuttle service (taxi costs about US$20) but it does have a great bar and restaurant. Food is quite ample ... I had the a very good portion of sirloin beef with veggies (large piece of broccoli, two large half pieces of corn on the cob, potatoes, all boiled) and two glasses of a good Argentina wine. US$100 total. Room was average with twin beds, comfy and quiet. Elevators are unique (at least to me although I've seen a lot of them around the world) with two side by side that function simultaneously and allow their large wheeled luggage trolley to go in one side and out the other, very functional, actually. Check in and out was cheeful and smooth.

“Nice enough hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2010

On arriving in Bergen, the hotel we were informed was a short walk away ....... was 5Kms away! However, that's nothing to do with the hotel. No real complaints about this hotel. It's comfy enough, the staff are friendly and very helpful. The rooms were pretty basic. More motel standard than hotel. As it was only for the night I suppose it was ok.
The price of beer is extortionate so bring lots of cash!

“The spa and gym made it even better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2009

I have stayed here once before and then the inside of it was under construction and not much to brag about. Now they have fixed the whole inside of the hotel, but still kept its charm and even more important, the awesome personell. The parking is also for free. The outside of the hotel is still the same old, but when I came in the door it was like stepping into a brand new hotel. Cute girl in the reception as well! And the new spa and gym made the stay even better, got no excuses not to work out while travelling now... better bring my sneakers next time. Make sure to join the guestprogramme: I get a restaurant voucher with 100 NOK every time I stay at Scandic, can't complain about service like that!

“Great location and superb service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2009

Booked the hotel as it is very close to the airport and the business area Kokstad in Bergen. Arrived the hotel and was greeted very welcoming. Rooms were nice and clean, and was very positively surprised to find they had a lovely relax area with steambath, saunas and gym.
Having stayed at several Scandic Hotels, I must say the breakfast is oustanding.
Will be back!
