My husband, 2 yr old son and I just returned from a two-week holiday in Norway. We stayed at this hotel for two nights prior to joining our Hurtigruten cruise and one night at the end. My parents were also staying at the hotel in similar rooms.
Location – You really could not ask for a better location. Located right in Bryggen and within a few minutes walk to the fish market, Mt Floyen funicular and everything else in Bergen. It’s also the only hotel specifically on the Flybussen aiport shuttle route which is extremely convenient. Despite this, the receptionist gave us a blank stare when we asked for the early morning bus schedule, then told us to go out and ask one of the drivers.
Breakfast - Good quality and lots of selection. For those with mobility challenges, be aware breakfast is served in a room only accessible by a flight of stairs.
Rooms – We were put into newly renovated rooms. Very stylish and the beds were very comfortable. That said, the renovations are shoddy at best, heaters oddly mounted and the wooden shutters do not fit the windows. In our first room the shutter only covered the top half of the window, in our second the shutter covered only the left two–thirds of the window. Frankly if I was the carpenter, I’d be embarrassed. In each case, we had to fasten blankets to the windows to make the room dark enough to sleep. Families with kids should know the windows open right up and don’t have any safety features. The bathrooms are bright and stylish, however my parents were afraid to shower because of the unsafe design of the bathtubs (bottom too high off the floor, too slippery, awkward glass door and sharp countertop corner). Free wi-fi is available but the signal doesn’t reach all rooms.
Construction - We were booked into the Blu by our travel agent and after reading the reviews here, I was worried about the noise. I emailed the hotel manager and received a very impersonal reply and directed to the construction information on the hotel’s web page. The fact the construction information is not noted on the home page is dishonest, and it was only after some searching that I found the construction details under ‘Hotel Info’ near the bottom of the page. (At this point, I would have booked us into another hotel however we were past the point of getting a full refund, we figured we’d give the place a try). Construction takes place from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm and during our stay, this was the case. That said, once construction stopped, the hotel is quiet and we didn’t encounter any noise from the street or neighbouring rooms.
Crib – we booked a crib for our 2 yr old, and the hotel provides good quality ‘pack n plays’ with nice comfy sheets and duvet. Unfortunately on our first stay, the crib was incorrectly delivered to my parents room. On our second stay, it didn’t show up at all.
Pool - The construction notice on the website specifically states “Modern fitness centre complete with luxurious indoor swimming pool, sauna and solarium opening July.” On our second stay, the weather was rainy so I thought my 2 yr old would enjoy a dip in the hotel pool. The button in the elevator for the second floor is labelled Bad & Sauna, but there is no pool or sauna here. I went to the front desk to ask where the pool was and was told they didn’t have one and that I was thinking of their other hotel in Bergen. When I pointed out it says ‘Bad’ right in the elevator and that there were pictures of the pool on the hotel website, I was met with a blank stare. Do they have a pool? Who knows. Nobody at reception could tell me and I never found one.
In the end, we managed to have a total of three quiet, restful nights of sleep here, but we would never stay here again. The level of confusion, disorganization and indifference was truly bizarre.
