“a reasonable choice in an expensive city!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Berren is an expensive city...Norway in general is expensive....so when I booked my room well in advance through the webpage at approximately $70 Australian a night I thought I had a bargin...and for Norway i certainly did. While my room was a reasonable size (by european standards) and clean it was certainly nothing fancy. In fact the whole hotel was quite dated and a little tatty.
Breakfast was not included in the price but was reasonably priced and there were plenty of choices, wifi was available, the staff were generally helpful and pleasant and the hotel is located about a 10 minute walk from the fish market or central mall area. All in all a reasonable choice in an expensive city...nothing fancy but clean and convenient, probably what would equate to a budget hotel in Australia.

“Standard Comfort Hotel.”

This is a standard Comfort Hotel, no more no less. Fairly small rooms. Nice service.

“Not as reasonible prices as it may seem”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

We booked a room through Choice Hotels' Norwegian internet pages. I gave the hotel chain's own search engine information saying that we were 2 adults, and 2 kids.

We got a confirmation of a room for 2 adults and 2 kids for NOK 799,- for one night from Saturday to Sunday.

When we came home, I saw on my bank statement that they had charged me NOK 1049. I asked them in an email why they had done so, and told them to pay back the NOK 250 extra they had charged - but they denied to do so in the reply they gave me. They told me I had paid NOK 250 less than I should, because I should have paid NOK 250 extra for each of the kids.

I had to argue in 3 emails to them before they gave up the fight and paid back my NOK 250.

It is a part of this history that breakfast is NOT included.

So these are the price rules at this hotel:

- We booked a room for NOK 799 (which is reasonable).
- According to the rules we should have paid NOK 500 extra for the kids.
- If we wanted breakfast, that would cost us NOK 85 pr adult and NOK 42,50 pr kid, total of NOK 255.

TOTAL PRICE OF ROOM FOR ONE NIGHT: NOK 1384,00.

Then there are other hotels which actually give you more value for money.

Before I understood all of this, I had a plan of giving the hotel 4 of 5 points - but now the prices aren't really that good - and the attitude they showed me (even when I really had a confirmation saying the room costs NOK 799 pr night for 2 adults and 2 kids) were really bad.

The room was ok, but the bathroom was a bit worn. Beds were ok.

But all in all: The price politics and the attitude from the staff on email after the visit was really really bad. The total deal of staying here isn't better than what other hotels can give you, but they try to fool you with a low price not including kids or breakfast.

Dear evlenol, we are very sorry about this incident. There was a problem with the internet page and because of that the 500 NOK that you were meant to pay for the extra two beds for the kids had not been added to your total amount. This should never have happened. The receptionist tried sorting this out by letting you pay for only one of the extra beds, since the problem had happened due to our internet page. But she probably did not explain it to you good enough upon departure. The receptionist never denied to give you the money back, but said that it had to be decided by one of the managers. And of course we gave you the 250 NOK back, since our internet page was the problem to start with. The reason why it took 3 mails back and forward to get you money back was that they misunderstood you in the mail, and we highly apologize for that. It is worth mentioning that the price of 1384,-, including breakfast and two extra beds, would have been one of the cheapest prices for a family room at that date in the highest season in Bergen. Our single rooms sold for around 1580,- at that same date. In August the hotels are filled with corporate travellers in addition to summer tourists, so it is by far one of the two months when the prices are at their highest. That is why we also offer a Low Price Calendar, with benefits of booking early.

I must also say that the information about breakfast not being included, is very clear when booking the hotel. We exclude it because a lot of people (including me) prefer not paying for the breakfast that they never have time to eat anyway. We are also situated in the middle of the city, with food available on every corner, so there are plenty of other breakfast choice for the ones that prefer Asian meals, curries and so forth, instead of the breakfast we offer at the hotel. For the readers information, the text when booking a Low Price Calendar room is: "Welcome to a modern hotel stay. Since the offers in the Low Price Calendar are almost too good, we can’t allow changes or cancellation to your booking. The room is cleaned before you arrive and every 4th day during longer stays. If you wish to start the day with our delicious breakfast you can add it at check-in for only 85 crowns (local currency). Stays of course entitles to Nordic Choice Club membership points. Payment is due upon arrival at the hotel. Welcome to Comfort Hotel!"

WEB page info: Our Low price Calendar is updated now, so the money when adding extra beds will automatically be added before giving the total price. We have also reduced the price for extra bed to 200 NOK.

Again, we are very sorry that you had a bad experience "evlenol", and hope you still had a nice stay in Bergen.

Best regards,
I-H Sekkingstad

“Rudest front desk ever”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

people found this review helpful

When I inquired of rate and availability I was informed that the rate was 1080kr. I stated that it was kind of high. She said it is low for Norway. WRONG. Was the highest I paid by like 100%. But I was stuck with it since it was 10pm and raining. The young guy at the desk was helpful and directed me to the free parking. She did not provide me with any direction or suggestions when I asked about what to see in town. Must be a future ex-wife. The hotel was full of Cruise people from Spain and they took over the morning breakfast which was good and had variation compared to other places. The room small and did not have a mattress on it but a foam pad. Even though I was on the 3rd floor, the window was on ground level on the back of the building with NO SECURITY LOCKS, anyone could climb in the window.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere

Dear Dillboy, we are very sorry that you experienced our staff as rude. It was never their intention to answer you in a disrespectful way. When the receptionist said that the price was low for Norway, that was not totally true, you can find a lot of cheaper hotels in Norway. It was on the other hand a cheap price for high season in one of the biggest cities in Norway, and all numbers we get show that we have some of the lowest prices in Bergen. The amount can go up to almost the double when not booking ahead, and that is why she said that the prices are low. In other hotels it can go up to 3 times as much for a standard room. Maybe you pre-booked the other hotels, or maybe you just got lucky.
When it comes to the girl not providing you with any direction or suggestions on what to see in town, I apologize for that on behalf of me and the staff. We do have a lot of brochures with information that could have helped. I do however find it really inappropriate that you write the comment with "future ex-wife". There is no need for an assaulting somebody in that way.
As all the other hotels in Bergen, we do have Cruise and bus tourists. In the same way as all of our other guests, these tourists are very valuable for us. It is however hard to avoid some waiting during the breakfast since they mostly all leave at the same time. Next year we will have less groups and more room for individual travellers.
The rooms are all around 18 square meters, but since almost all our rooms are double rooms they can feel a bit smaller. The benefit is that most guests get a double room for a single room price. The mattress itself is what we in Norway call “rammemadrass”, which is a thick mattress with legs on it. The foam pad is just to protect the mattress. Comfort Hotels have some of the best beds out of the hotels in Norway, and we get really good feedback from customers on them. Since some like it hard and some soft, it is however difficult to please all. I hope you still slept well during your stay. The 3rd floor is the lowest floor we have rooms in, and some of them start on ground level since the hotel is situated the bottom of a hill. It is not common to have extra security locks on the windows in Norway, since they are locked by just pulling the handle down. This is standard windows that are used in both hotels and private homes. The crime level in Norway is also luckily lower than most countries, and is said to be one of the safest countries in the world. If anybody is scared of break-ins, just let us know before using the room and we’ll find another one for you higher up in the hotel.
Again, I apologize for the rudeness you experienced, and hope you still had a really nice stay in Bergen. Best regards, Inger-Helen

“Make sure room not above bar!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

Reasonably priced hotel (by Norwegian standards!) within 10 minutes walking distance of the Fish Market/Quai (where the airport bus stops – although as there were 4 of us with luggage, we used a taxi). Clean and comfortable although the AC didn't cope well in the bedroom. They didn't have a twin room available for my friend and me on arrival early evening and we had to stand around for some time, refusing to be palmed off with a double. But the biggest problem was that, even though their room was on the 7th floor, my parents were kept awake well into the early hours by noise from the outside bar.

Room Tip: Ensure it is not above the outside bar

Hi there Thurza_Child! Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that the customers in the bar kept you awake, especially since this is normally one of the most quiet hotels to stay at in the city centre of Bergen. There is no outside bar, just a few tables where customers can sit down, so this must have been sombody standing outside while smoking their sigarettes.
Or maybe a neighbour having a party since it is only private houses and companies surrounding the hotel. Please let us know next time you arrive, and we will make sure to find a room for you facing the garden instead. Best regards, Inger-Helen
