We were staying at the Clarion hotel at the begining of our trip up the western fjords but we returned at the end of the holiday as we liked it so much. The first room we stayed in was superior overlooking the harbour, the view is definately worth the extra money. The room was quite old fashioned in terms of decoration but was spacious and had a modern bathroom also overlooking the harbour. When we returned we had requested a standard room but the room we recieved seemed better than the superior! It was very contempory with beautiful bedding and a gorgeous bathroom, only difference appeared to be no toiletries and a smaller room, however when we came to pay they had infact given us a standard room with a harbour view, which should have been £60 more but they met us half way and we paid 30 more instead. Well worth it though as it was very luxourious. The Clarion is right next to the port so if your getting a ferry or express boat to the fjords its the best location for this. They also had free internet and the breakfast had lots of choice (especially for us brits as usually its cold meats and salad for breakfast in europe). I would definately recommend this hotel for a stay in Bergen, there are quite a few hotels central but this had everything we needed and was at a competative price. The staff were really helpful and friendly and despite the hustle and bustle of the hotel once in your room you couldnt hear a thing.....the best thing though was the pillows! They were the biggest pillows ive ever seen, i even took a picture they were that big. All in all a wonderful stay.

I only stayed one night in Bergen, but this was a good choice. I tend to prefer B&B's and homestays so that I get a better feel for an area, but the single night meant I would get little of that anyway, so I was pleased with my choice.

First, for those traveling on the express boat from the Sognefjord area, this is a perfect place to stay. The express boat literally pulls in next to the hotel. You walk off the boat, take a right, and walk 30 feet to the front entrance. In other regards, it's still in a fantastic location, being just 10 minutes walk around the harbor to the Brygge.

In general, the hotel is comfortable and modern, with slick decorations and nice appointments in the rooms, lobby and restaurant. My room was small, but you come to expect that in European hotels of all kinds and it was more than adequate. I had a desk, flat screen TV, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom large (though it had a shower and not a bath). Two easy chairs and two windows (with a view of the building next door). Medium-sized armoire with no pants-press or safe. No fans or AC, but both windows open wide and July in Bergen isn't the tropics.

The staff was helpful, though the day clerk was a bit dim-witted when I asked her about the highly-recommended walking tour of the Brygge (the main attraction of the town). Afternoon and night staff were more helpful, including pointing out that they had a free, high speed internet station around the corner (handy, though sometimes backed up with users...never had to wait long) and allowed me to print out my boarding pass for the next day for no charge.

Breakfast was large and diverse and included the first scrambled eggs I'd seen in 5 days in Norway :) The best part was the view, however: walking through the dining room, you can access a narrow, harbor-side deck that is directly across from the Brygge and gives spectacular views in the morning or evening. A great place to grab a cup of coffee and take your camera and journal.

Pros
- Great location in many regards (ferry and express boats, walking distance to Brygge, short/medium walk to university section or Bergen Aquarium, about 15 min. to train station, 3 minutes to Flybus [airport bus] stop).
- Nice, if small, rooms. Modern, clean, comfortable.
- Amazing deck view of Brygge and harbor

Cons
- Price of some things. I didn't eat there, but in desperation, grabbed a beer at the bar. It cost me 82NOK! That's about $13.50 for a .4 liter beer. If she hadn't poured it already, I would've handed it back.
- Small thing here, but too much clutter in the room. I scooped all the pamphlets, brochures, and hotel guides into a drawer just to free up some space for my wallet and change.

Tip
- The nearest Flybus stop to the airport is just a 3-4 minute walk away. Get the staff to show you on a city map.

Right on the water in the midst of Bergen. Can walk to fish market and shops. Room was small, but modern.

We stayed here for 3 nights and found the position perfect. The views over the harbour and across to the Bryggen were beautiful both from our room and also from the restaurant terrace. It is right in the middle of Bergen, but because it overlooks the harbour it avoids the noise of the central streets.
Our room itself was well equipped and very stylish. We had a corner room with three large windows. One could lie in bed and admire the picture postcard view!
We eat in the hotel once in the evening. Again the view was delicious, the food acceptable. The staff were helpful, if somewhat rushed. We were warned by one of the staff about the price of room service, which is extortionate
We would certainly stay there again.

I took my mother to Norway and we stayed here two nights while in Bergen. We had a beautiful view of Bryggen and the harbor in general. Our balcony was literally right over the water!

This is clearly an old building, and I'm not sure I loved the various levels within each floor (carrying our bags up four steps after getting out of the elevator was a bit tough) but the location is great.

I had mixed experiences with the front desk. There was one older lady that was a bit "cool" when I checked in....she said they didn't have a room with a view for me. When I mentioned that we had booked months in advance, another clerk overheard me, made a comment to the one helping me (in Norwegian, so I couldn't understand) and voila! there was a room with a view for us. The others at the desk were all delightful.

If you want luxury, this isn't it. If you want close proximity and a nice view, check it out!
