So this place *should* be your typical slightly-run-down, last-renovated-in-the-1980s, mid market hotel, filled with middle management business travelers. The rooms are tired, the beds are small and only barely comfortable, its hot - no ac - and the curtains don't block the midnight sun. But - we loved it! They try so hard to be a great, friendly hotel that it totally makes up for the at-a-stretch-average physical plant. There are quirky touches around to remind you that you are staying in an old bakery. Reception is chirpy and friendly, ready with maps and help. There are free waffles in the lobby from 3-6pm every night, delicious waffles I should add, with cream and jam. And a free rather-extensive dinner buffet from 6pm-9pm. And of course, the standard breakfast buffet that hotel-going Europeans seem to consider an essential human right is part of the room rate. All of these gestures impressed us, especially in Norway! Where you have to mortgage your house to buy a small cup of coffee! Now, the breakfast isn't fantastic (or even very good, but it is certainly plentiful and adequate). And the dinner buffet will remind you of a (decent) school cafeteria. But the aforementioned waffles are truly delicious, there is a a rooftop sauna/exercise room and terrace at which you can help yourself to a non-alcoholic beer, and the whole place is conveniently located on a side street that isn't too terribly loud (thank goodness, because you are going to need to have your windows open in the summertime). So thumbs up to these guys - A plus customer service won us over - we would definitely stay there again if we were ever back in Trondheim. And I suspect this place will be on Clarion's renovation list in the next year or two (Clarion - are you reading this?), in which case it will be all-around super.
