“Strange atmosphere, fine for conferences, not the leisure traveller”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010 via mobile

The hotel is on top of Hollmenkollen, Oslo centre is 30 mins by car. It's large, and basically a conference hotel. As a tourist, especially in the summer, it has a cold, uncomfortable feel. Many rooms face a grass slope going up right outside the window (2m) view, or another building a couple of meters away.
Breakfast was good. All in all it's reasonable value if your expectations are not that high.

“Comfortable stay, but some irritations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2010

This hotel is in a hilly location on the periphery of Oslo city. It is in a quiet area and has access to the city by public transport, though a car is advisable. The exterior of the hotel and the grounds look dated but the interior is generally fine and comfortable. Although the staff were professional, they were not particularly friendly.

The hotel occupancy appeared to be very low.

We had two interconnecting bedrooms which were comfortable and well equipped but were a bit too compact for multiple occupancy. The swimming pool was quite nice.

A few small irritations colour our experience. The noise of the lift motor could be heard from the bedroom / The restaurant staff weren't very familiar with the menu / There were errors in the bill whilst checking out / The hotel grounds need attention.

These irritations aside, our stay was comfortable and of reasonable value and we enjoyed the breakfasts, pool, tennis court and free WiFi.

I stayed 3 nights with my wife from 5th-8th Feb and we had a great stay.It is a bit of a trek initially to find, recommend a taxi on arrival especially if you have luggage.Once you figure out the routes of the T-bane (Train) and busses its easily got to.Close to Tryvann ski area and Holmenkollen ski jump. Also close to Frognersteren for Tobogganning.I reccommend this!!.All around pretty good hotel for the money.

“Beautiful, well-appointed & maintained resort hotel; superb hillside location; views; helpful staff; extensive breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2009

We stayed at this beautiful, well-appointed and well-maintained hotel over a weekend in September during a quiet period when the it had few other guests and no major social functions. This situation made for a very enjoyable visit.

The hotel has a spectacular location with beautiful views towards the city, suburbs, hills and forests. The extensive buffet breakfast till 10 a.m. included hot and cold, cooked and uncooked foods plus a variety of beverages available in the restaurant with beautiful views over forested hills and valleys.

We found hotel staff pleasant and room service prompt and responsive in attending to our requests. Theodor at reception was particularly pleasant, cooperative, congenial, knowledgeable, helpful, sociable and a credit to the hotel. In front of the lobby elevators-lifts, there was an alcove with two computers providing free Internet access for guests without their own portable computer.

On an upper floor in the annex building, we had a spacious, well-appointed room facing a broad panorama of wooded valleys and hills stretching off towards the horizon in the far distance. The room was quiet, without air conditioning, so one could hear other guests when they moved around but nothing we found particularly bothersome.

It is worthwhile to buy a one-day travel pass from the hotel reception desk. At the time of my writing this review, Frognerseteren metro station (which one can conveniently walk to from the hotel) was closed because of construction farther down the line for the Nordic World Ski Championships. To get to town, take bus 1B which leaves from a stop on the main street and to the right of the hotel entrance drive. Buses pass every 15 minutes and take about 10 minutes to Besserud metro station. Cross the street and take a train (generally every 12, 27, 42 and 57 minutes past the hour) to Majorstuen at the edge of central Oslo. From the same platform you can take any of the other trains passing through to take you the two or three stops into the central area. With frequent services and good connections, this travel takes about 35-40 minutes total — part of which passes through scenic panoramas and leafy, hillside residential areas.

“Amazing views, but strange housekeeping routines”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2009

Spent one night at Soria Moria and thought the hotel wasn't that bad. The location is amazing, the view from the restaurant is to die for! The rooms are ok, but as we went for breakfast in the morning our bed was made and the towels removed, even though we were checking out the same day. I thought this was quite strange as it creates double work for the housekeeping department, but also because we had no chance to take a shower.

The scenery in the winter time is even more amazing when there is snow there. The hotel also has a separate building connected with a tunnel where there are several original Theodor Kittelsen paintings, definitely worth a look if you are staying there!
