“Good Option”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Stayed here during a sales conference. The hotel is located on Oslo's main street close to the Royal Palace. The rooms are large, roomy and comfortable. Free wi-fi throughout the hotel is an added bonus. The metro and train station are closeby and thus make traveling a breeze. The staff is friendly and warm. The breakfast in the morning was excellent. Overall a good option while your staying in Oslo.

“The perfect stay in Oslo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

During our trip throughout Norway, Oslo was our first stop. We stayed in the Karl Johann Hotel and every single minute of our stay was perfect. When we arrived at the front-desk a very helpful lady told us everything we should know about the hotel and the city of Oslo. The hotel itself is very stylish in a classic way. Our room, 2nd floor and with a view over the central 'park' of Oslo, was stunning. Large, very clean with a great bed. When you walk out of the hotel, you can go practically anywhere, as it is situated in the heart of Oslo, which is one of the most relaxing and beautiful cities in the world.

Other reviews complaining about the noise: we were at the frontside of the hotel but didn't have any nuisance. Only disadvantage I can think of is the fact that the parking possibilities in the Oslo city centre are very limited and very expansive, hotel doesn't have a parking garage of its own.

“Location, Location, Location: earplugs, earplugs, and ambien...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

Met expectations, would recommend, but might stay at the other Best Western property next time...

Location: On Karl Johans Gate, across from parliament.

Staff: Outstanding; helpful, sincere, knowledgeable, warm, efficient.

Room: Booked a suite under the OsloPass scheme, and for once in my life the picture matched the room. It. Was. Huge. Even by US standards. Room decor was dated but clean.

Public areas: Worn, but cleaned regularly (noted daily vacuuming, dusting, etc.)

Breakfast: Typical buffet, usual cold variety with two rotating hot choices.

About the location: You are right in the middle of the 'action', and on three out of four nights, at about 2am, we would hear heavy work on the street outside or neighboring buildings. My personal favorite was re-sanding the gaps between the cobblestones. Seriously. Ever wondered how they do that? Here's how- they spread sand on the stones, then vibrate it into place with a pneumatic rotating flapper. We could feel the vibrations. All this I learned at 2 am. Then I popped another ambien...

If/when I return to Oslo, this hotel will still be in my top 5 choices, but I might opt for one off of Karl Johans Gate.

“old hotel but strategically located in central oslo”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

we stayed there in august 2011 for 1 night stay on the way back from bergen. we arrived at around 2200pm and all the restaurants were closed . we had to buy a fast food fried noodle at the grocery store next order

the room was big with 1 double and 2 single but the rate was very expensive (about usd350). bathroom is a little outdated with the shower glass cannot slide properly. we had room on the 5th floor facing karl johan gate and surprisingly not very noisy

overall it was a good location with all shops nearby. reception was exceptionally polite and helpful

Room Tip: choose rooms facing karl jiohan gate with a view

“Great location if you don't like sleep”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

Fairly standard three star hotel. Room decent size and TV worked no problem.

Breakfast ok.

Staff were good and generally helpful

Location could not be faulted. Oslo is a relatively small centre and this location was great for walking around. 5 mins to National Gallery, 10 mins walk to Royal Palace; 20 mins walk to Opera House

Major problem - hotel is on main street. Some noise is to be expected but a Bar pumping out euro beat directly under your room at 2am is unforgiveable and unsleepable. This isn't publicised on the website. AVOID SECOND FLOOR ROOMS AT ALL COSTS.

We obtained a transfer to the Fifth floor for our second night stay. Noise of street and bar still audible but much less so.

Due to the noise problems I wouldn't suggest going back to this hotel and there were other centrally located hotels of a similar cost available.

Room Tip: Only accept a high floor or buy earplugs!!!!
