A 4 day (3 night) weekend in Oslo in late November: an excellent, efficient -albeit it not cheap - Flytoget train ride from the Airport to National Theatre station, that turned out to be some 50 m from the Hotel was a good start. Due to the quick transfer, we were rather earlier than anticipated and our room was not yet ready. The Desk Staff took the suitcase and said that we would be told when the room was ready if we stayed in the Bar area. We decided on a warm drink. I asked for a pot of tea and when I requested Darjeeling, I was told that they didn't have any! Not an auspicious start for a so-called 5 Star Hotel.
We had asked, and paid, for a better room and, following advice elsewhere on Trip Advisor, for a room overlooking the "courtyard" for some peace and quiet at night (it was). Our room was on the top floor (8th) and some way away from the elevator/lift.The room size was good and the bathroom was larger than many hotel rooms that I have seen!
Breakfast was included in the "weekend special offer" price and was sufficient - but only that. For a Leading Hotel of the World, we both felt that the breakfast was somewhat lacking in choice, quality and general ambiance of the display -and the service really needs to be improved...having to ask several times for used plates to be removed is not a good sign of awareness. This was, if course, due to the tables simply being too small and too cramped to neighbours. Waiting 15 minutes for coffee to be brewed when the ONE pot, that the entire breakfast room is served by, is empty smacks of a further lack of forethought on behalf of the waiting staff.
A couple of light bulbs in the bedroom were defective. I mentioned this at the front desk as we left one morning: one standing light had its bulb replaced (the old one was left on the table by the TV). One bathroom ceiling light remained non-working for our entire stay...do the cleaning staff ever manage to look at such details and pass on problems for rectification or is everything simply left for the guest to "complain" about? I received a guest's survey from the hotel some days after our visit and I did mention the problems stated here. I have received no reply or comments from the hotel - so they probably threw away any critical points!
The restaurants we did not use, since we had failed to make reservations and the Theatercafe was always packed solid. Another time I would certainly try to find a time to visit.
The hotel is excellently placed in the city and is only a few minutes from most places...the main shopping street or the harbour. The tram stop is 20 m from the hotel and the train is 50m.The Opera is about a 20 minute walk and was the furthest we managed in our short stay. Lots of good restaurants in the area. The 3 we chose I will review separately (1= Alfred 2= Oro 3= Arakataka). None are cheap.
The train cost 170 Nkr (=21,70€ =18,40 GBpounds = US$29) per person each way and takes about 28 minutes. You can use a credit or debit card at the airport and buy return tickets too. A Taxi from the Hotel to the Airport was advertised at 895 Nkr (=114€ = 97 GBP = US$153) and probably takes almost an hour!!
We would probably use the hotel again - but only if they have similar special offers: otherwise I could not justify the cost.
Room Tip: Rooms not overlooking the busy street are quieter. Try to get a renovated room.
