First things first. I don't demand a lot from a hotel. I don't care if it has a spa, fancy restaurant, business centre or gym, and I don't care if the decor doesn't look as if it came out of a decorating magazine. All I expect is a clean, comfortable room in which I can get a good night's sleep. The Scandic Edderkoppen could not even manage these rather modest requirements but it did provide me with several experiences I had never before encountered at any hotel. The first room (#732) I was offered absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke and the empty beer can on the balcony and filthy door frame leading to it suggests that this must be the hotel's 'party room'. I returned to the front desk and, for the first time ever at a hotel, I requested another room. The person at the front desk said she did not know the room stank. If this is true, I guess the cleaning staff can't smell or they don't inform anyone that there's a problem with a room. I was then given another room (725). It was quite a large room but it was so stuffy it was impossible to sleep (the windows don't open) and I spent my time in Oslo running on about 3-4 hours of sleep per night. The inside of the fridge had the remains of what looked like soft drink stuck to the back of it, the front of the drawer under the TV pulled off in my hand, and the outlet that I used to plug my laptop adapter into sparked when I inserted the plug. Oh, and maybe it wouldn't bankrupt Scandic to provide paper tissue in the rooms. After all, it is cold/flu season. My final experience at the Edderkoppen was when I tried to have a shower at 06:15 the morning I left to fly home and discovered that there was no water at all. (According to the person at the front desk, the water main in the hotel's basement had burst).
I realise that hotel mgmt. cannot be held responsible for the arrogant 'gits' who feel that rules prohibiting smoking apply to everyone else but them. However, I do feel that it should be responsible for cleaning rooms properly or at least not trying to rent them to guests. It also should be able to ensure that the furniture isn't about to fall apart. Finally, it might not be a bad idea to ensure that basic maintenance be done. I stayed at this hotel because my wife and I have enjoyed our previous stays at Scandic hotels in Sweden and Finland. I don't know if the Edderkoppen is typical of Scandic hotels in Norway or if it's unique. Whatever the case, I think we'll give Scandic hotels a miss from now on. The one positive comment I can make is that the breakfast offers quite a wide array of food. That said, be prepared to put up with rather sullen employees. All in all, there MUST be hotels that offer better value for money than this one.
Room Tip: The idea of a room with a balcony sounds good but it seems that the balconies never get cleaned.
