“Not Bad for Oslo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

I stayed two nights in two different rooms for the same rates, but with drastically different experiences. On the first night, I arrived late and was put up in a small room with twin beds on the same floor facing a busy street. It was terribly loud, but the room felt crammed and dingy. The next morning I asked for a room on the higher floor and got a much more spacious one on the 5th floor with a slanted ceiling. It also felt much nicer with the skylight. In both rooms, the bathroom was fairly clean, but the second one came with a bathtub, which was a nice bonus.

Whatever you do, do not skip the breakfast. It was by far one of the most enormous feast I have ever had for breakfast, and it was so tasty. I regretted not waking up for the breakfast in the first morning. The friendly staff was going to give me a refund (NOK 50), but then realized that it was not feasible because I pre-paid the hotel online. (The breakfast was probably worth >NOK100.) Otherwise, pre-paying online gives you a decent value.

The location of the hotel is fairly convenient with <5 min walking distance to the central train station. There is 7-11 across from the hotel and a few other cheap places to eat nearby. The free wi-fi was nice.

Sure, there is not much charm. Given that it is in Oslo with sky high price, I had a good experience at Thon Spectrum and would probably stay there again.

“Perfect for weekend stay in OSL”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

My friend visits me in OSL and I booked this place and we stay together for 2nights. It's walking distance from Oslo central train station which you might arrive from the airport. The hotel location is not very charming but, clean and comfortable enough, also reasonable price for very expensive city like Oslo. Simple reception which has some free map and vending machine and one elevator available. Room size was big enough for two adults. Convenient store located just outside of the hotel, open 24hrs. Receptionist speak excellent English and very friendly.

“Hugely overpriced... but then again, so is everything else in Norway”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2009

Oslo is a ridiculously expensive city, where a "cheap" hotel room will easily run you $150 USD per night. The Thon Spectrum Hotel was about the cheapest I could find in Oslo, but the lack of a breakfast, lots of teenagers and young adults (this is the only hotel in their price range), and a mediocre location makes this hotel a poor value. I was only there for an overnight stopover, and for that sort of purpose, it's a decent option--only 2-3 blocks from the train station (Oslo S).

The Scandinavian-inspired rooms are modern and warm, with beautiful hardwood floors, stylish closets, and comfortable beds. But despite the spotlessness, the rooms are TINY, with little room for luggage! The bathroom also suffered from clean-but-cramped syndrome.

The lobby area is stylish and cool, although the desk clerks just want to get you checked in and have you not bother them further. Fine, no-nonsense for my brief overnight stay. Several computers are available for guest use, although wireless Internet access is free in all guest rooms.

Good location about two blocks from the central train station (Oslo S). The hotel is at the end of a pedestrian street, where there are several restaurants, pubs, convenience stores, shops. I did not think it was scary or a bad area, as another review mentioned.

“Fine for one night...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2009

I think there was an event going on in Oslo the night that I was staying as my usual hotels of choice were over £100 a night when usually they were £70-85. This hotel was £75 when previously it would be listed at £50-£60! I think it was definately not good value at £75.

This is a budget hotel and is located 10 minutes walk from the bus/train station. It is not one of the best areas to stay in and there can be dodgy characters hanging around. I chose it as I needed to be in this area for an event and it is close to the bus/train station. If you do not need to be in this area, I would probably choose another as there are lots of much nicer hotels! The room was very small. There was no space to put luggage. I was only staying for one night so did not have a suitcase this time. The desk had marks on it, which is not a big deal...There was no pen and paper. The bed was fine. I put I did not recommend this hotel because I would not stay here again. It was ok for one night but it wasn't the kinda hotel I would like to come back to at the end of the day.

“OK for the Price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2009

Stayed at the Thon Spektrum in December 2007, selected for price and location. Was VERY close to oslo central Station 5-10 minutes. Five minutes to the Oslo Spektrum.

Our room overlooked the street and there was noise from a nearby pub until about 1AM - nothing too bad though. I had to go to the dining room to access (paid) Telenor network access - inconvenient but not too bad. Breakfast was pretty typical. Room was OK. I wasn't expecting five stars and wasn't surprised. I felt safe in the neighborhood. I'd stay again, but more likely will try another hotel next time.
