Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights as part of a business trip with my husband. He has stayed at this hotel many times and this is why we chose it as our base for Oslo. Firstly the location of The Grand is as convenient as you could get. The front overlooks the citys main boulevard, St Johans Gate.
We were welcomed at the door by a very smartly dressed and courtious bellman. Check in was quick and the staff were welcoming. We were upgraded to a junior suite which overlooked the front of the hotel and had doors that could be opened onto a small balcony. The room was well decorated, had a desk and sofa/chairs and 2 flat screen tvs. The bed was really comfortable and we had a good nights sleep.
In the morning we ate breakfast in the restaurant and the choice of food was very good. All sorts of fish, cheeses, breads, fruits. There is also bacon, sausages, beans, eggs, etc. If you wanted smoked salmon with scrambled eggs as I did then you order the eggs at the table when you sit down, you can also order a latte this way as well. Service was very good regularly topping up empty coffee and tea cups. The restaurant was always busy so I can only summise that is because of the good breakfast that you can enjoy. Whilst we were there breakfast finished at 10am on the Friday, 11am on the Saturday and 12 noon on a Sunday. Perfect for a lie in !! The same restaurant is used for lunches and was always very popular.
From the front of the hotel if you look right up the hill you will see the Palace and the the left is the shopping street. We walked to the station ( 5 mins ) and caught the train up to Holmenkollen to see the ski jump. We actually went one stop on and watched as the skiers and sledgers went down the woodland trail. There is a great restaurant there where you can sit by a log fire and have a snack.
Things we did in Oslo were to walk to Vigelandsparken and see the wonderful 212 sculptures in Oslos largest park, walk to Aker Brygge the harbourfront with shops and restaurants, visited the National Gallery, walked to Akershus Slott the fortress which overlooks the harbour, watched contempory dance at The Opera House, and generally enjoyed this wonderful city. Eating out is very expensive in Oslo. The first night we just wanted something quick to eat and on the opposite side of the square is Peppes Pizza. Lovely atmosphere and great food. A large pizza for 2 and 2 beers was £50. We also ate at Engebrets Cafe, Oslos oldest existing restaurant and had a very nice meal there. A 2 course meal for 2 with with drinks was £150.
I would love to go back to Oslo and if I did I would only ever stay at The Grand as it's central location, wonderful breakfast and friendly staff would be hard to beat.
