I had the pleasure of staying at Grims Grenka Hotel in early July and found it to be a wonderful experience and a modern, trendy alternative to the rather stoic hotel scene in Oslo. This was my second time staying at the hotel, having previously experienced it in January last year and found it to be very well positioned from a price - value point and the roof top bar was a added bonus with a lively local clientele enjoying the long summer Scandinavian nights made for a great atmosphere.
Aside from some slight confusion at check in which was quickly rectified through the courteous management notably Ashraf Habib, whom I believe is front office manager (?) and seemed to be present most times in lobby. He went out of his way when I stayed there previously in January to kindly assist with some hot coffee on arrival on a frigid morning arrival and more importantly also accommodating me at 10 am early arrival having just landed from USA flight into OSL, which is why I chose to return to the hotel this second time and found everything with my stay was generally a very positive experience.
The room was modern, clean, safe and comfortable - and nice to find iron and ironing board in the rooms for a change as many hotels in Europe still have not adopted this as "standard" which it should be (!!). They offer an excellent breakfast buffet which is key and I recommend indulging in to minimizing eating out much in Oslo, which based on a paltry USD these days is not a cheap experience as most know. I found the location quite central to everything in Oslo and I look forward to staying there again when I return to Oslo next year.
In all other regards I have to say the service standard was excellent with very efficient arrangement of taxi through the front desk, accommodating late cleaning of room, etc were all very professionally and courteously managed throughout.
If you want a nicely located modern hotel in Oslo with unique characteristics this certainly fits the bill, and only other one I am aware of that is also quite unique style but did not get a chance to see was the newly opened Carlton Hotel Oslo which I have heard is quite nice but cannot comment first hand on relative to Grims Grenka comparison.
