“A pleasant summer weekend stay at Grims Grenka...”

I had the pleasure of staying at Grims Grenka Hotel in early July and found it to be a wonderful experience and a modern, trendy alternative to the rather stoic hotel scene in Oslo. This was my second time staying at the hotel, having previously experienced it in January last year and found it to be very well positioned from a price - value point and the roof top bar was a added bonus with a lively local clientele enjoying the long summer Scandinavian nights made for a great atmosphere.
Aside from some slight confusion at check in which was quickly rectified through the courteous management notably Ashraf Habib, whom I believe is front office manager (?) and seemed to be present most times in lobby. He went out of his way when I stayed there previously in January to kindly assist with some hot coffee on arrival on a frigid morning arrival and more importantly also accommodating me at 10 am early arrival having just landed from USA flight into OSL, which is why I chose to return to the hotel this second time and found everything with my stay was generally a very positive experience.
The room was modern, clean, safe and comfortable - and nice to find iron and ironing board in the rooms for a change as many hotels in Europe still have not adopted this as "standard" which it should be (!!). They offer an excellent breakfast buffet which is key and I recommend indulging in to minimizing eating out much in Oslo, which based on a paltry USD these days is not a cheap experience as most know. I found the location quite central to everything in Oslo and I look forward to staying there again when I return to Oslo next year.
In all other regards I have to say the service standard was excellent with very efficient arrangement of taxi through the front desk, accommodating late cleaning of room, etc were all very professionally and courteously managed throughout.
If you want a nicely located modern hotel in Oslo with unique characteristics this certainly fits the bill, and only other one I am aware of that is also quite unique style but did not get a chance to see was the newly opened Carlton Hotel Oslo which I have heard is quite nice but cannot comment first hand on relative to Grims Grenka comparison.

“Never going there again”

My boyfriend and myself was looking forward to a romantic night in the city. My boyfriend had booked a 70 kvm suite at Grims Grenka with a bathtub in the middle of the room. Sounded really romantic to drink champagne in the bathtub and at such a beautiful hotel.

We showed up at the hotel at 4.30 pm and the receptionist informed us that due to a technical error our room was not available. We asked why they had not called us and informed us of this earlier. The room was even pre-paid. She did not have an answer to that. I told her I have worked as receptionist my self and I understand that a technical error usually means that more important customers was given our room instead. To that she nodded and smiled. So, did she have another suite for us? She did!

We got the key and went up to the room to check it out. The room was 26 kvm.. The bathroom itself was smaller than my shower back home, seriously! The sofa in the bedroom was made up for two more people. We went downstairs again and asked how 1. They could call this room a suite and 2. How could it cost only 500,- kr less than the 70 kvm we had already booked? She insured us that it was a suite and that it was only one step down from the suite we had booked. Then she asked us if we had looked at the pictures on their hotel website. You see; many of the pictures on their hotel cite was of rooms that did not exist anymore. So that may be why we were so confused.. COME ON!

We told her we did not wish to pay a fortune for a small and ordinary hotel room and we wanted a refund. No problem she said. She took our phone number and insured us that the hotel manager would call us on Monday and offer a compensation. The money would be transferred to our account Monday morning. A week went by and we did not receive a phone call nor the refund. We had to call the Hotel manager TWICE before we received our refund, and no, we were not offered a compensation.

“Beautiful to look at, but falls apart”

Checked into this hotel on my Scandanavian holiday. The lobby and rooms were visually impressive and the hotel is walking distance to almost all the sights in Oslo. However things started to unravel when I started unpacking and realized the room was like a sauna and the temperature could not be adjusted on the broken control in the room. To the hotels credit they moved me to a much larger suite at no additional cost with a huge free standing tub (Garden suite). However after being in the room 10 minutes it became clear that the Ir conditioning was not working in this room either. At this point that gave a kind of "knowing nod" and handed me a fan with no mention of when it would be fixed. I re-read trip advisor and quickly saw this has been an ongoing issue in the hotel. Also annoying was the fact that whole the hotel claimed to have wireless it never worked in either rooms I was in and I had to come down to the lobby for it to work on my pc. In the lobby there are always a couple of people on their laptop who are experiencing the same connection problems. In my garden suite there were other problems that appeared minor compared to the two I mention, for example the sink handle kept falling off, some walls in the room and the carpet had huge stains on them. I will not stay there again

“Poor and inadequate”

This is one of the worse hotels I have ever stayed in. The rooms and bathrooms are very small. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. I hated being in my room, and couldn't wait to get out of there. Ventilation is also terrible.

Room Tip: Do not stay there!

“You'll need to work harder if we are to return!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2011

Grims Grenka claims to be a 5* hotel and while it looks the part it cannot really match the standards of other 5* hotels. We have just returned from Oslo and despite the jaw dropping prices (£50 for a bottle of indifferent wine anyone?) the sun shone, the Norwegians were charming and the live music for Oslo Fest was fabulous. It was the hottest weekend of the year thus far and we really need the air con in the hotel to work. It didn't. We are not the kind of people who usually demand air con but the problem was that the extraction system in general wasn't working - hence steamy bathroom and smelly toilet. It was really hot in the room and because it overlooked the internal courtyard the window couldn't be opened. The young woman at the desk was sympathetic but as it was the weekend they couldn't fix it and because they were full they couldn't change the room. I expected a gesture to say sorry but....This hotel costs £220 per night and it just wasn't worth it. If you want 5* - try the Grand. If you don't then find a hotel that at least is worth the money. Pull your socks up Grims Grenka!

Thank you for your review of your stay. We are currently working on the issues you stated above and we are very sorry for the inconveniences this may have caused you. Temperature in the room is an issue which has been addressed.
