“If your gut instinct says no.......”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2011

Stayed here on our last night on a discount no cancellation/refund offer, and if it wasn't for that we would have left. Room stank of stale cigarette smoke, either it was an undeclared smoking room (despite being part of an interlinking 2 room suite with the other labelled no smoking??!!) or the staff have crafty fags whilst cleaning it. Dated scruffy decor with hair dye splashes staining the shower tiles. Spongy beds with heating that is temperamental at best. We had room 206, facing onto the main street and we were kept awake by the trams going past and our upstairs neighbour stomping (or maybe just walking?) around their room until 2am. A phone call to reception replied that they couldn't hear anything and maybe it was from outside. Breakfast choice includes a chicken curry sandwich(!) but the ham and egg choice arrived on stale bread with a spread that could only be described as tasting like facecream and inedible. To rub it in, the good hotel we had stayed in at the start of our trip was visible less than a block away! Yes it was inexpensive but there are plenty of other decent hotels in cental Oslo within 20NOK of this one, don't book it.

“Great location, central to everything "Oslo"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

P Hotel is located a short 5 minutes walk from the Central train station. Having arrived to Oslo at nearly 11pm on a Saturday night at the end of the Norway in Nutshell Bergen to Oslo trip, we were aware we'd be arriving late at night and had only a general idea where the hotel was located. We headed out of the station tugging our bags along, took the wrong street and STILL got to the hotel in under 5 min. Upon arrival we found a welcoming reception area and attended check-in desk. The gated elevator is small but not unlike many European elevators typically are. The decor could use some updating, hall carpets are a tad shabby but the hotel is very quite. We had a street front, 6th floor room with a balcony, only 1/2 dozen rooms have balconies, but if you can get one, take it. Being able to 'get outside' 6 floors up is perfect. There is no A/C in the room so it's nice to open the double doors and let the air in. Ironically 10 minutes after our arrival to our room a fireworks show started somewhere over the water, luckily because we were so high up and had the balcony we got to see the whole thing, no idea WHY the fireworks were going off but it was a nice welcome to Oslo treat.

The bathroom is modern and clean. Being August when we were there with temperatures near 20 degrees overnight with no a/c we needed to sleep with the windows open, there is a small amount of street noise at night from the trams and trains but it's no too bad and we didn't require ear plugs.

Upon waking to daylight we really realized just how centrally located the hotel was. The trams and trains were literally just around the corner, the main eating causeway with the typically american chain resturants is just 4-5 blocks away. The more upscale and Norweignen resturants are a little farther, but again not beyond walking distance. Having spent 3 days in Olso, we only took one tram and one bus and those were to get to the national museums, fram, kon tiki and the viking museum, everything else but the ski jump is walkable.

The hotel has a great sitting room with free internet on the 2nd floor. In addition to internet the room offers coffee & tea 24hrs a day and lots of seating if you want to stretch out with friends. Breakfast is included in the room and consists of a basic sandwhich, a peice of fresh fruit, and a juice box. The 'bag' breakfast is left in the common hallway outside your door at about 6:30am. Several options of sandwhiches are offered but it you don't fill out your preference form you get ham and cheese.

In general, for the expensive vity of Oslo, P Hotel is reasonibliy priced and good value, for a good night sleep and easy access to the sights.

“Simple hotel wit skimpy breakfast, but very centrally located”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

The hotel is located very centrally in downtown Oslo, one block from the main street and Stortinget (the parliament). Its location is just above the northern exit from the Stortinget underground station, and about 10 min walk from the central station. The hotel is also accessible by tram and airport buses (stopping just outside). Its location also means that there's some noise from traffic and clubs, if you're sensitive to this you should request a room facing the courtyard.

Check-in was fast and easy. You are required to pay for your stay before getting access to your room.

The building is probably from the early 1900s, and seems to have been renovated in the late 1980s/early 1990s (with exception of the stairs, which looks like they have not received much attention in the last 50 years. Even if having booked a single room I got upgraded to a corner family room with lots of windows and space. The room had a sofa, a small desk, two chairs and a good grand lit.

The bathroom seemed slightly newer than the rest of the property. It had a shower, a large sink, a small cupboard and a toilet. Everything seemed nice and clean. The only toiletries provided were all-purpose soap in wall dispensers.

The room also had a TV (with rather few channels, only one international) with and a DVD player, a water kettle and tea bags and instant coffee. I would rather recommend the coffee maker in the lounge on the 2nd level. This lounge also has two internet-connected PCs, a microwave and a sitting area.

Breakfast was provided in a paper bag set outside my door. It contained a packaged sandwich, a small carton of apple juice and an unripe pear. The sandwich was the default ham/cheese as I had not notified the hotel of my preference before 1600 the day before. There's 5 different options available.

This kind of breakfast has its ups and downs – you are very restricted in choice, and some people might find the breakfast too little filling. On the other hand, you can stay longer in the room and have your breakfast in bed. Or just use the breakfast as a lunch snack and have a complete breakfast in one of the hotels nearby.

I did not see much of the staff, as the single point of contact was check-in (check-out just involves leaving your key on the front desk, as you will already have paid). The one person I spoke to was friendly and efficient.

All in all, this is a good choice if you're OK with a simple hotel in a property that's not new and a simple breakfast. Personally, I would probably go for a hotel with a full Scandinavian breakfast next time.

“Very unpleasant stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

I am not normally that fussy but decent sleep and coffee in the morning is really all I ask of a hotel. A colleague booked me in here for 3 nights. Staff were horrible from the outset. I was put in a room with a door separating me from my neighbours. They had a baby that screamed for 3 nights non stop (maybe they could have put the baby in a room that had a proper wall separating them). There were noises all night from elsewhere in the hotel. Sleep deprivation hell. Don't even bother with the horrible sandwich in the morning and not even a half decent coffee anywhere to be found. No room service. Horrible bathrooms. I haven't ever stayed in a Western/ European hotel that was less charming.

“Great location and price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

We stayed here for a couple of nights from a last minute booking. First views of the room exceeded my expectations - the room was very comfortable, plenty enough space for the 2 of us, and the bathroom was very modern and clean. Our towels could be changed if we wanted and the bed was made each day.

Our room opened onto the street which was a bit of a noise problem - street/rubbish cleaners and trams start early so would wake us up but the bed was comfortable.

The breakfast of juice box, fruit and sandwich is a bit odd but if you don't fancy a sandwich for breakfast you could always save it for lunch - Oslo is very expensive for eating out so we were happy to eat it. One thing - when we checked in the lady didn't mention breakfast at all. She just checked us in, got us to pay and gave us our key - no explanation of anything. It wasn't until we were waiting to check out, that we overheard another lady telling new guests that you could pick what type of sandwich - if this matters to you! It does get put in a bag outside your door in the morning, but it was nice enough having breakfast in bed each day so no complaining there! There's a jug and mugs in the room with a range of teas/coffees so you can make a hot drink as well. In the same area as the computers (which have free internet access) there is a bigger range of hot drinks as well, free of charge.

The location is fantastic - Oslo is quite compact and easy to walk around and here you are right in the middle of it. Central Station is only a few mins walk away, as are a lot of the sight seeing attractions. Public transport is all very simple to use and nearby.
