“Disappointing overall”

I missed my first night's stay as my flight from the UK was cancelled due to bad weather. I telephone the owner and he said he would keep the room for me (at a charge, of course).
I eventually arrived the following night and I spent two nights in a very nice room which was very warm, very clean and tidy and with everything I needed.
The problems started when I was asked to move rooms for the last night (which felt reasonable at the time - but in retrospect does not, given that I was charged for the first night) and was given a room right at the back of the hotel which felt like it was used as 'overflow'. As a lone female, I didn't feel safe, the room was cold, the bathroom was tatty and none of the furniture matched. The instructions on the safe were in German so I had no idea how to use it (I can speak some German), the windows were internal so there was no natural daylight - and despite the sub-zero temperatures outside, there was no spare blanket in the room - because, as the owner said, "if I put a spare blanket in the room then people will use it. This is NOT the Hilton".
The location of the hotel was fantastic - and the facilities were good (breakfast was excellent and free internet a bonus) - I am not super-picky but overall I couldn't help but feel this was a disappointing experience. I am afraid I wouldn't go back on principle.

“Friendly hotel, good value and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

Adequate size for a single room with a good walk-in shower. Breakfast was nice and homely with friendly ladies who served it. The hotel is handy for all the sights and the Westbanhof and near the underground for getting around if you don't fancy walking. On a main shopping street but not many cafes/restaurants around. Next door to the English cinema though if you need to catch a movie. The entrance is not on the ground floor but once you get back this the facilities are nice, clean and with friendly staff. Vienna was a beautiful city and really enjoyed my trip there.

“Not terrible, but some issues....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

We just returned from a multi city stay - ending in Vienna. We stayed at Pension Corvinus for 5 nights and had reserved the family apartment in advance for 149 euro per night. It is located on a very busy street but a great location for getting to all the sights via UBahn.

My husband and I travel with our 18 month old daughter - so we typically like to rent apartments so we have the use of a washer/dryer and full kitchen for eating in (we don't usually dine out at night).

We arrived and were shown to our room - a double room with a baby cot. After looking for the kitchen and realizing the room didn't have one, I went downstairs with my printed reservation to ask about the apartment. "Oh, you need the kitchen?" the proprietor asked me. Well, that is what I reserved...so...we were finally shown to the apartment. A great size, with everything we needed (2 bedrooms, large bath, galley kitchen and washer/dryer unit).

After a long day of travel, we wanted to shower - and soon found there was no hot or warm water. Strange. The safe was not functioning (no batteries) and the dishes in the cupboards were not clean. After a quick bite to eat we go back to reception to ask about the hot water...apparently they turn it off if the apartment is not rented. After about 1/2 hour and a few phone calls later...we have hot water. We then ask about using the washer/dryer and were informed it was broken. But they said they would do a load of laundry for us. Sounds great. FYI - The bed was quite hard and VERY creaky, but we didn't have any street noise, which was nice for such a busy area.

Breakfast was typical - croissants, yogurt, boiled eggs, cereal, cheeses - something for everyone. The women serving in the breakfast room were very attentive and friendly, especially to our daughter. My husband found the fruit to be old and turning, cereal a bit stale and croissants dry.

On our last day, we were asked if we would pay our bill in cash. Wow, that would be quite a lot of cash for 5 nights! We weren't expecting that, especially since the website clearly states they take credit cards and Paypal. When asked if they accept credit cards, a direct answer was avoided...clearly there is some sort of tax/fee they don't want to pay by accepting a credit card. We compromised to pay 1/2 cash, 1/2 credit. At check out, the bill total was increased by 12 euros - explained to us as a charge for the laundry service. What? We thought because the washer/dryer was broken that the laundry would be complementary - and noone mentioned a fee in the days we were there. We refused to pay the charge (and by the way - 12 euros for one load of laundry?!?)

I would recommend this hotel - but we didn't feel totally comfortable with our stay.

“Rave review! Hungarian hospitality, plus so much more....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

I knew this pension was run by Hungarians when I saw "Corvinus," so I knew the hospitality would be super, but I could hardly believe what gracious hosts the Esti family members were! Everything was wonderful: a very clean, quiet and spacious room with air conditioning that really worked, comfortable beds and a well-equipped spacious bath, plus a deck with seating and a view of the rooftops of Vienna, a generous breakfast selection and the willingness to make an omelette if you ask, service with a smile when we had a TV remote control problem, a great price and a perfect location for shopping, touring the historical Ringstrasse and near the Metro. I cannot rave enough! We truly missed the Esti family after we left because they were so very nice.

“Fine value, friendly service in a city of culture”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2010

My wife and I very much enjoyed our three-night stay at the Pension Corvinus, and fellow travelers to the culturally-rich city that is Vienna would be well advised to do likewise.
First impressions of the Corvinus are likely to be less than favorable, as the accommodation is accessed by taking an outdated and too-small elevator to its front desk. The Corvinus’ signage competes` with the Hotel Haydn (located in the same building) and the commercial jungle that characterizes Mariahilfer Strasse. Once inside, however, the Corvinus` presents itself as a peaceful and most comfortable pension. Indeed, the Corvinus receives high marks for its warmth of welcome, helpfulness, and`attention to the needs of its clients. Strong kudos to this family-run pension for its hospitality.
The Corvinus appears to have received some`recent upgrades in both its bedrooms and breakfast area. Our room, which overlooked a small plaza and a baroque church, featured a` recent model flat screen TV, mini-bar (reasonable -prices), and a spiffy new sink that employs a motion sensor. The room itself was`medium in size, featuring a`large double bed, tired-looking carpeting, yet it remained bright and clean. What’s`more, the double-pane windows were a real plus as they created a wall between our room and the din of the street below. Our room’s bathroom was` quite `small, yet the shower offered plenty of hot water and ample pressure.
Breakfast at the Corvinus is satisfactory, with its top feature efficient, friendly service. My wife and I enjoyed the usual fare, yogurt, cereal, croissants, and more. The coffee was tasty and piping hot. We also enjoyed the warm milk that acts as a`nice complement to your morning coffee. Also on offer were fresh vegetables and cheese. The Corvinus would be well advised, however, to reconsider its supplier of breads and these were not at all light and flaky and were quite bland.
In short, the Pension Corvinus offers fine accommodation and good value for money. Our daily rate `was`109 euros. Two other points also need to be underscored: the Corvinus scores top points for service; and its location, while not in the heart of Vienna, is a two-minute walk to the city’s simple-to-use subway. In just three short stops the visitor is next to St. Stephen;‘s Cathedral and Vienna’s touristic epicenter. By all means, consider the Corvinus on your next trip to the Austrian capital.
