I stayed at this great Viennese hotel for 3 nights at the end of December, after reading the mostly positive comments from visitors here on TripAdvisor. I booked a single room online, and upon arrival at the airport I bought a 3-day transit pass. The hotel staff had previously e-mailed me directions using public transport, which directed me to the Taubstummengasse stop on the U1 subway line. The directions from here were a little confusing - I ended up going into a pharmacy and finding an English-speaking girl who explained where I was located. After that, it was easy. You want to take the stairs to Florgasse, then walk straight ahead a block or so to Mozartgasse and turn left. Straight ahead on the right, past a statue, is the hotel, which is well posted. It is only a few minute's walk from the subway.
My room was a typical size (small by U.S. standards) for a large city European hotel single - little wasted space, but very adequate room for clothes, a built-in desk, a handy mini-bar refrigerator, and a single bed which was very comfortable, by the way. The room was kept spotless in typical Austrian fashion, the hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas and all of the staff with whom I had contact were genuinely friendly people with nice smiles.
The on-site restaurant appeared to be very nice, but I did not eat there. I did, however, drink a beer there on two separate evenings (they have a draft beer brewed especially for the restaurant - try it!) and most of the customers of the restaurant appeared to be people from the area. The food looked good and they certainly appeared to be enjoying themselves.
Breakfast was excellent, exactly as described by others - plentiful and filling, with great coffee.
To get to the city center: exit the hotel and turn right and walk the short distance to the main street. Turn right here. A tramline runs along the sidewalk, and your transit pass is good to ride on it. I only used it when it stopped at the time I was walking past - otherwise, I was able to walk into the city center before the next tram arrived. Realistically, you can walk to the Opera from the hotel in 10 minutes or less (unless, like me, you stop to explore along the way). I nearly always walked instead of taking the tram, just because I found it faster and warmer than standing around waiting for the next tram to arrive. Take time to walk over to the Naschmarkt which is a few blocks away - an amazing open air market with many food stalls, eating places, and vendors with great things to bring home as souvenirs.
I bought beer and snacks at a small supermarket just down the street from the hotel. I also found a very nice little cafe a few blocks from the hotel - exit the hotel and turn right and walk to the main street. Instead of turning right to go downtown, turn left. Walk a few blocks and find the Cafe Wortner. I actually liked it so much I ate there twice.
To sum up - great service, good beer, a good location that is easy to get to, and a very reasonable price. I am looking forward to visiting again - with my wife this time!
